De ontwikkeling van infrastructuur voor transport en opslag zal een cruciale rol spelen bij het koppelen van vraag en productie. In Europa wordt daarom een waterstof-backbone gepland - een grootschalig waterstofnetwerk met opslag- en productielocaties - voor vervoer van waterstof naar deze industriële clusters. Het lokale niveau is echter niet aangesloten op dit waterstofnetwerk, maar is er wel de verwachting om klimaatneutraal te worden. Er zijn daarbij de nodige uitdagingen zoals de intermitterende opwekking van hernieuwbare energie en overbelasting van elektriciteitsnetten. Smart dHYstrict onderzoekt daarom de kostenefficiënte inzet van waterstof in lokale energienetwerken zodat de belasting van het elektriciteitsnet drastisch gereduceerd kan worden dankzij optimale lokale consumptie en tijdelijke opslag van overtollige energie. Het project streeft naar een optimale combinatie van verschillende technologieën en test diverse configuraties op twee complementaire proeftuinen:op Green Energy Park in Zellik (BE) zullen distributie en opslag van waterstof gebeuren via een waterstofdistributienet en bijbehorende waterstoftanks die beide bidirectioneel worden ingezet (waterstof injecteren en onttrekken)op de industriële site van VDL (NL) zal de waterstof lokaal worden opgeslagen als samengedrukt gas en/of onder vorm van een andere dragerOp beide locaties zal een energiemeetsysteem (EMS) - ofwel 'slim energiebeheersysteem' - worden ontwikkeld dat de omstandigheden zal monitoren en zo zorgt voor de juiste inzet van middelen op het gewenste moment.

Description (EN):

The development of transport and storage infrastructure will play a crucial role in linking demand and production. A hydrogen backbone is therefore being planned in Europe - a large-scale hydrogen network with storage and production locations - for transporting hydrogen to these industrial clusters. However, the local level is not connected to this hydrogen network, but it is expected to become climate neutral. There are certain challenges, such as the intermittent generation of renewable energy and overloading of electricity grids. Smart dHYstrict therefore investigates the cost-efficient use of hydrogen in local energy networks so that the load on the electricity grid can be drastically reduced thanks to optimal local consumption and temporary storage of excess energy. The project aims for an optimal combination of different technologies and tests various configurations on two complementary testing grounds:at Green Energy Park in Zellik (BE), distribution and storage of hydrogen will take place via a hydrogen distribution network and associated hydrogen tanks, both of which are used bidirectionally (injecting and withdrawing hydrogen)at the VDL industrial site (NL), the hydrogen will be stored locally as compressed gas and/or in the form of another carrierAn energy measurement system (EMS) - or 'smart energy management system' - will be developed at both locations that will monitor conditions and thus ensure the correct deployment of resources at the desired time.
