Nieuwkomers versterken de zorg- en welzijnssector De zorg- en welzijnssector in Vlaanderen en Nederland kampt met personeelstekorten, terwijl veel hoogopgeleide nieuwkomers moeite hebben om een job te vinden op hun niveau. Next Steps voor nieuwkomers wil deze mismatch aanpakken met gerichte opleidingstrajecten en ondersteuning voor zowel werknemers als werkgevers. Het project wil deze mismatch aanpakken door tools en modellen te ontwikkelen die nieuwkomers helpen om duurzaam aan de slag te gaan op hun kwalificatieniveau, en werkgevers te ondersteunen in het creëren van een inclusieve werkomgeving: In de zorgsector wordt een schakelsemester ontwikkeld waarin nieuwkomers essentiële theorie en praktijkervaring opdoen. Dit traject, opgezet in samenwerking met hogescholen en zorginstellingen, omvat onder meer taalondersteuning, interculturele training en een duaal leertraject, waarbij deelnemers leren én werken in de zorgsector. Het doel: een soepele overgang naar een job, met perspectief op een werkcontract. Voor sociaal werk wordt een voorbereidend jaar opgezet met modules rond vakjargon, wetgeving en praktijkervaring via stages en werkplekleren. De erkenning van eerder verworven competenties (EVC) speelt hierin een belangrijke rol, zodat deelnemers sneller kunnen instromen in reguliere opleidingen en jobs. Naast opleidingen zet Next Steps in op ondersteunende maatregelen zoals taaltrainingen en praktische hulp bij kinderopvang en mobiliteit. Werkgevers worden begeleid om hun werkplek ‘nieuwkomer-proof’ te maken via sensibilisering en buddy-systemen. Er wordt voortgebouwd op eerder succesvolle projecten zoals MaxiPAC (AMIF) en In de Zorg - Uit de Zorgen (Interreg Euregio Maas-Rijn), die laten zien hoe samenwerking en maatwerk leiden tot duurzame integratie in de arbeidsmarkt. Door deze inspanningen draagt Next steps bij aan een inclusieve en sterkere arbeidsmarkt in de grensregio.

Newcomers Strengthen the Care and Welfare Sector The care and welfare sector in Flanders and the Netherlands is facing staff shortages, while many highly educated newcomers struggle to find jobs that match their qualifications. Next Steps for Newcomers aims to bridge this gap through targeted training programmes and support for both employees and employers. The project tackles this mismatch by developing tools and models that help newcomers find sustainable employment at their skill level, while also guiding employers in creating inclusive workplaces: In the healthcare sector, a bridging semester is being developed, giving newcomers essential theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience. This programme, set up in collaboration with universities of applied sciences and care institutions, includes language support, intercultural training, and a dual learning pathway where participants study and work simultaneously. The goal: a smooth transition into a job, with prospects for a long-term contract. For social work, a preparatory year is being created with modules on professional jargon, legislation, and practical experience through internships and work-based learning. The recognition of prior learning (RPL) plays a key role, helping participants to move faster into regular training programmes and jobs. In addition to training, Next Steps offers support measures such as language courses and practical help with childcare and transportation. Employers receive guidance to make their workplaces more accessible to newcomers through awareness sessions and buddy systems. The project builds on successful initiatives like MaxiPAC (AMIF) and In de Zorg – Uit de Zorgen (Interreg Euregio Meuse-Rhine), which show that collaboration and tailored support lead to sustainable labour market integration. Through these efforts, Next Steps contributes to a more inclusive and resilient cross-border labour market.
