WaterTrap introduces an innovative and collaborative approach to wastewater management, addressing critical environmental and public health issues in regions facing pressures from inadequate sanitation infrastructure. The project provides practical and sustainable solutions through advanced wastewater treatment technologies and collaborative governance. The initiative includes the reconstruction and upgrading of wastewater infrastructure, significantly improving the sanitation and environmental quality in the project areas. In Albania, WaterTrap will reconstruct the sewer network in Tren and install first-level treatment via a three-section septic tank. These improvements are crucial for protecting local ecosystems by limiting the discharge of untreated wastewater into natural water bodies. On the Greek side, the project involves installing carbon-neutral wastewater treatment plants, integrating renewable energy and remote monitoring to minimise environmental impact and improve efficiency. WaterTrap also enhances public engagement with environmental issues by developing eco-tours and educational visits to nature-based treatment sites, such as artificial wetlands, helping both visitors and local residents connect with sustainable solutions in practice. Emphasising cross-border cooperation, WaterTrap brings together experts, authorities and communities from Greece and Albania to share knowledge and address common challenges. A major deliverable is a comprehensive action plan for wastewater treatment in the transboundary Prespa basin, outlining steps to fill current gaps, meet European standards and ensure long-term access to safe, sustainable wastewater management for all communities in the region
