Alcohol use during pregnancy is a medical, psychosocial and sociological problem worldwide. Following recommendation of WHO about global alcohol action plan for 2022–2030 to minimalize the harmful use of alcohol including the reduce of prenatal alcohol exposure, we propose the project FASD-Bridge. Maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy often causes damage to the unborn child. Prenatal alcohol exposure can cause growth abnormalities, craniofacial, cardiac, renal, osseous and ocular malformations, developmental, cognitive and behavioural disorders as well as limitations in partial performance and thus global limitations in everyday life. The center part of the current project is developing stronger links between research institutions and public entities across Baltic context by promoting regional cooperation and boosting knowledge, transfer of know-how and merging the best practices to strengthen the implementation of the global strategy in terms of individuals with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and their families (biological, foster, adoptive). There is a need to focus more on the issue of alcohol consumption during pregnancy and on its consequences as well as to support families raising individuals with FAS and FASD in South Baltic Region. Key components: Building a network of cooperation: establishment of an international network of interdisciplinary experts, transfer of developed solutions to institutions involved in family care in partner countries. Jointly achieved increase in social awareness and professional education: information campaigns targeting medical and social care staff, training and workshops for those involved in the care of pregnant women and children, publication of project results in scientific journals and local media. Epidemiology in the Region and early diagnosis of FAS/FASD: harmonization of guidelines and definitions for FAS/FASD, assessment of regional prevalence of FAS/FASD in partner countries, development of awareness-raising tools (educational materials, social media campaigns), design and implementation of training programs for professionals (doctors, midwives, pediatricians) Support for families with children with FAS/FASD in the Region: analysis of the needs of families raising individuals with FAS/FASD (surveys, focus groups), development of a family support model, considering different family structures (adoptive, foster), pilot implementation of the support model in partner countries and its evaluation Scaling up: Jointly developed solutions, tools, methodologies, and practices will be standardized and made adaptable for other regions and countries, ensuring scalability. Partner institutions will collaborate with other national and international organizations to expand the reach of the FAS/FASD prevention, diagnosis, and support programs.Training programs for professionals and support systems for families will be rolled out on a larger scale through partnerships with health institutions, schools, and social organizations. Durability: The guidelines, support models, and educational materials will remain accessible to stakeholders, ensuring continued use after the project ends. The solutions will be embedded into healthcare, social care, and educational systems of partner countries, guaranteeing long-term impact. The international network of experts established during the project will foster ongoing collaboration, innovation, and knowledge exchange.
