Description (IT):

MEDMAQUIS intende recuperare e incrementare la diversità degli habitat naturali caratteristici della macchia mediterranea attraverso la realizzazione di azioni pilota congiunte in Sicilia nel sito Natura 2000 Bosco di Santo Pietro, nella Riserva Vallone Piano della Corte, nel Complesso Immacolatelle Micio Conti, nella RNO Isola delle Femmine e a Malta a Buskett, Pembroke e Xrobb l-Għaġin. La biodiversità della macchia mediterranea è minacciata da fattori esacerbati dal cambiamento climatico quali: rischio desertificazione, diffusione specie alloctone vegetali invasive, incendi, scarsa consapevolezza sull’importanza di preservare gli ecosistemi naturali. Principali obiettivi in risposta alle sfide identificate saranno la tutela biodiversità da specie aliene, l’aumento del grado di naturalità degli ecosistemi e la riduzione delle minacce alla biodiversità. Si utilizzeranno tecniche comuni per la protezione di uno stesso ecosistema mediterraneo, con attenzione a specificità locali. Le tecniche saranno innovative per gradualità dell’intervento, mitigazione conseguenze cambiamento climatico, uso di tecnologie e aumenteranno la capacità di risposta degli habitat agli eventi naturali avversi; attività di prevenzione consentiranno una riduzione del rischio di degrado degli ecosistemi; il coinvolgimento delle istituzioni ne favorirà la tutela. Facendo leva su sperimentazioni già realizzate dai partner e sul trasferimento di conoscenze, il progetto consentirà: lo sviluppo congiunto di strategie e piani d’azione volti al contrasto della diffusione delle specie alloctone invasive (O.T 3.1) e alla prevenzione degli incendi (O.T.4.1); di implementare azioni pilota (O.T.3.2, O.T.3.2, O.4.2,); di realizzare un programma educativo (O.T 5.2); di favorire la replicabilità delle soluzioni identificate (O.T 6.1 e 6.2). Ne deriverà un aumento di servizi ecosistemici di cui usufruiranno cittadini, mondo scolastico e accademico, istituzioni pubbliche, associazioni, imprese.

Description (EN):

MEDMAQUIS aims to restore and increase the diversity of the natural habitats characteristic of the Mediterranean Maquis through the implementation of joint pilot actions in Sicily in the Natura 2000 site Bosco di Santo Pietro, Riserva Vallone Piano della Corte, Complesso Immacolatelle Micio Conti, RNO Isola delle Femmine, and in Malta in Buskett, Pembroke and Xrobb l-Għaġin. The biodiversity of the Mediterranean Maquis is threatened by factors exacerbated by climate change such as: desertification risk, spread of invasive alien plant species, fires, lack of awareness of the importance of preserving natural ecosystems. The main objectives in response to the identified challenges will be the protection of the biodiversity from alien species, the increase in the degree of naturalness of ecosystems and the reduction of threats to biodiversity. Common techniques will be used for the protection of the same Mediterranean ecosystem, with attention to local specificities. The techniques adopted will be innovative in terms of gradualness of interventions, for mitigating the consequences of climate change, for the use of IT and will increase the response capacity of habitats to adverse natural events; prevention and awareness-raising activities will allow a reduction of the risk of ecosystem degradation; the involvement of the authorities responsible for managing the sites will favor their protection. By leveraging experiments already carried out by the partners and thanks to the transfer of knowledge, the project will allow: the joint development of strategies and action plans aimed at combating the spread of invasive alien species (O.T. 3.1) and preventing fires (O.T.4.1); implementation of pilot actions (O.T.3.2, O.T.3.2, O.4.2,); to create an educational program (O.T 5,1); to encourage the replicability of the solutions identified (O.T 6.1 and 6.2).This will result in an increase in ecosystem services that will be enjoyed by citizens, the school and academic world, public institutions, associations and enterprises.
