The project CHORAL- Cultural Heritage fOR AlL aims to mobilise green and digital accessibility to cultural heritage sites in Malta and Palermo. The project has the overall objectives of investingating accessibility in the programme areas and develop a joint strategy that enhances the current accessibility for increased tourism access and local visitors alike. The project will implement wayfinding totems to nudge greener travel. It also extends the accessibility concept to the digital world by using technology to create a framework to digitize less accessible cultural sites. CHORAL will pilot the digitalisation tools on two sites, one in Palermo and one in Malta. The outputs of the project aim to (i) transfer knowledge between territories and enhance the governance framework for access to cultural heritage sites (research and joint strategy), (ii) create a sustainable framework for digitalisation of cultural heritage sites in the case where accessibility is compromised through the pilots identified in the programme area, and (iii) create physical wayfinding totems and digital tools that enhance the tourism and cultural products and increase access and value for cultural heritage sites. The two regions identified by the programme have vast cultural reserves and the cooperation will bring together key players in the field of cultural heritage and accessibility to combine their skill and expertise towards common goals. The CHORAL project is the first to highlight the importance of access and accessibility to cultural heritage sites and, develop and test governance and implementation frameworks. It does this by taking into consideration that environmental constraints of the two regions, their obligations towards environmental targets and digitalisation ambitions within Europe, as well as enhancing the tourism product in the two islands and ensuring long standing sustainability of access for all.

Description (IT):

Il progetto CHORAL- Cultural Heritage fOR AlL ha come obiettivo quello di migliorare l'accessibilità dei siti del Patrimonio culturale di Malta e Palermo, in chiave Green e tecnologica. A tal fine, il progetto intende sviluppare una Strategia congiunta che migliori l'attuale accessibilità dei luoghi e beni culturali per i visitatori ed i turisti in diverse aree del PO INTERREG VI A ITALIA-MALTA. CHORAL prevede l'installazione di totem di orientamento per facilitare le visite dei turisti e visitatori ai siti culturali in modo più ecologico. Inoltre, estende il concetto di accessibilità al mondo digitale, utilizzando la tecnologia per creare un quadro di riferimento per la digitalizzazione dei siti culturali meno accessibili. CHORAL sperimenterà gli strumenti di digitalizzazione in due siti, uno a Palermo e uno a Malta. I risultati del progetto mirano a (i) trasferire conoscenza tra i territori e migliorare il quadro di governance per l'accesso ai siti culturali (ricerca e strategia congiunta), (ii) creare un quadro sostenibile per la digitalizzazione dei siti culturali nel caso in cui l'accessibilità sia compromessa, attraverso i progetti pilota individuati nei due territori e (iii) creare totem fisici di orientamento e strumenti digitali che valorizzino i prodotti turistici e culturali e aumentino l'accesso. Le due regioni individuate dal Programma hanno vaste aree culturali e la cooperazione riunirà i principali attori che operano nel campo culturale e dell'accessibilità per unire le loro competenze complementari verso obiettivi comuni. CHORAL è la prima iniziativa congiunta volta a sottolineare l'importanza dell'accesso ai siti culturali e a sviluppare e testare quadri di governance e di attuazione al fine di migliorare la qualità dei servizi per i visitatori e turisti. Il progetto tiene conto degli obblighi delle due regioni nei confronti degli obiettivi ambientali e delle ambizioni di digitalizzazione in Europa, oltre a valorizzare il prodotto turistico delle due isole e a garantire la sostenibilità a lungo termine dell'accesso per tutti.

Other Green Deal - Supporting infrastructure for sustainable mobility and promoting multimodal travel options are key priorities under the European Green Deal's sustainable mobility strategy. By promoting the use of totems in both territories to reach cultural sites, tourist and cultural destinations can encourage sustainable travel behaviors, reduce environmental impacts, and enhance the overall visitor experience while fostering a deeper connection between people, nature, and cultural heritage
EUStrategyAdriaticIonianRegion Pillar 4 of the EUSAIR Strategy highlights the importance of preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the region. This includes safeguarding historical sites, monuments, and traditions, as well as supporting cultural initiatives that foster intercultural dialogue. By allowing access to cultural sites, without limitations in capacity, due to the project digitalisation component of CH and the use of Totems, CHORAL contributes perfectely to this strategy and to sustainable tourism
