Contribution to wider strategies and policies:

  • Other The project contributes to the European Green Deal, which aims to reduce the carbon emissions and to transform the EU into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy. By implementing an optimized medical waste collection, sorting, storage, transport and recycling protocol in a cross-border manner, we will be able to recycle more medical waste, which in turn means less waste has to be incinerated. Work by M. C. M. Alvim-Ferraz has shown that medical waste incineration, next to the production of carbon dioxide, also generates various pollutants like dioxins, heavy metals, particulate matter, SO2 and NOX (M. C. M. Alvin-Ferraz et al., Waste Manag., 2005, 25, 638). Therefore, reducing the amount of incinerated waste will reduce the carbon dioxide emissions and lower the amount of pollutants in the air, which will contribute to the European Green Deal. Moreover, recycling the medical waste is resource-efficient and will allow the production of new virgin material thus promoting circularity and sustainability.
  • Furtermore, in the policy framework 2024-2027 of the NL Province of Limburg (Beleidskader Werken naar een toekomstbestendige economie) the necessity of a transformation towards a circular economy is underlined and that investments in the various supply chains and ecosystems are needed.
