Description (EN):

The Carpathians stand as one of the most biodiversity rich landscapes, a unique wildlife gene pool and a critical corridor for species migration and dispersal at European level. However, they face unprecedented challenges due to habitat fragmentation, which might impact the wellbeing of both wildlife and local communities in the project area. Recognizing the urgent need for wildlife preservation (including by EU and national legislation), our project pioneers a collaborative, inclusive approach, engaging all relevant stakeholders. The project is aiming for safeguarding natural habitats for wildlife, particularly large carnivores as umbrella species, while promoting viable human-wildlife coexistence. Via cross border collaboration, inclusive co-design, development and implementation of innovative tools, we aim to strengthen ecosystem resilience and support local communities. Our key strategies include: i) developing a comprehensive data collection and monitoring system to assess biodiversity status and human-wildlife conflicts); ii) piloting restoration actions (NbS) to enhance habitats and ecological connectivity; iii) co-designing, testing and promoting human-wildlife conflict prevention tools; iv) leveraging communication tools/channels to foster inclusive biodiversity conservation. Our project’s innovation lies in establishing a transboundary framework for joint management strategies, ensuring the ecological needs of large carnivores (through co-creative stakeholder approach, dedicated citizen science app, state-of-art monitoring, creation of professional and agile intervention teams), while prioritizing community safety and well-being. Project will benefit: forest and hunting management units, nature conservation authorities, protected area administrators, local communities, administrations, citizens, farmers, landowners, schools, research institutions, universities and a min. of 200 communities in the wider transboundary area of Slovakia, Romania and Ukraine.

Expected Achievements (EN):

To enhance biodiversity and sustainable development in the transboundary region of Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine and beyond by securing adequate natural habitats and fostering viable human-wildlife coexistence in the cross-border local communities through collaboration, inclusive co-design, and implementation of effective tools that ensure resilient ecosystems.
