Project acronym: GREENMEDPORTS~A_T_2.1_...
Project ID: 00013
Project start date: 2025-06-11
Project end date: 2028-06-10
Project status:
ongoingRelevant linked projects:
- SUSPORT (INTERREG ITALY-CROATIA, 2020-2023) (EN) | 1. Best practices analysis regarding the enhancement of environmental sustainability and port energy efficiency
- 2. Territorial needs assessment concerning the Green House Gasses (GHG) terrestrial (electric energy, heating, port service vehicles, port operational vehicles, heavy-duty vehicles, railway tractors) and maritime emissions (decomposed into the ones related to anchored, maneovring and moored ships)
- GREENMEDPORTs will use results of these analysis and assessment to support the joint development of the carbon footprint calculator, and to set the criteria for the definition of the Green Label (WP5)
- 3. Cross-border strategy to strengthen port environmental sustainability and energy efficiency, which the project partners committed to applying in the medium and long term by signing of a joint protocol (Memorandum of Understanding), that led to the institutionalization of a permanent cross-border cooperation network.
- GREENMEDPORTs will take inspiration from the Cross-border strategy to draft the Transnational Strategy (O5.2) and favour its adoption in participating countries. (EN), PIONEERS (Horizon 2020) (EN) | 1. Green Port Roadmap
- GREENMEDPORTS will adopt and customize this roadmap to fit the specific needs and framework conditions of Mediterranean ports. This adaptation will guide the establishment of pilot actions, including the Carbon Footprint Platform (CFP), by providing proven strategies and best practices for reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainability.
- 2. Stakeholder Community | PIONEERS (pioneers-ports.eu) GREENMEDPORTs can use this platform in order to initiate and support the dialogue among port authorities and other relevant stakeholders participating in the project and facilitate knowledge exchange related to the reduction of carbon emissions in the ports environment
- Leveraging this platform will enhance stakeholder engagement and foster a cooperative environment, essential for the success of the CFP and the Green Label certification. It will also enable the dissemination of best practices and innovations across the Mediterranean port ecosystem (WP2 and WP3).
- 3. Optimal Lock Planning and a Decision Support System (DSS) to enhance port operations significantly by reducing ship waiting times and enhancing traffic control in busy port areas developed by the Port of Antwerp-Bruges (project coordinator) as pilot action.
- The Optimal Lock Planning and DSS developed by the Port of Antwerp-Bruges can be integrated into the CFP of the GREENMEDPORTS project. This integration will optimize port operations by reducing ship waiting times and enhancing traffic control, thus contributing to lower emissions and increased energy efficiency. The Lead Partner will build upon the existing links with the Belgian Ports to exploit this outcome (EN), SMOOTH PORTS (Interreg Europe, 2019 - 2022) (EN) | 1. Action Plans for sustainable port development and traffic management in European ports
- GreenMedPorts will assess the extent to which the recommendations of the Smooth Ports Action Plans led to concrete outcomes and actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from port operations. Based on this assessment, the Project will then produce the Action Plans for Regional Implementation and the Transnational Low-Carbon Transport Strategy (WP5). (EN), LIFE4MEDECA (LIFE +) (EN) | 1. ECA4MED knowledge centre on technical, economic, and regulatory matters.
- The ECA4MED Knowledge Center offers extensive resources for capacity building, including documents, seminars, courses, and interviews. As part of the WP5, GREENMEDPORTS will leverage these resources to train port authorities, freight forwarders, and other stakeholders on best practices for implementing and managing the Mediterranean Emission Control Areas (MEDECA). This training will be integrated into the project’s activities to ensure that all involved parties are well-informed about the legal, technical, and financial aspects of emission control.
- Furthermore, The Knowledge Center provides information on policies, regulations, and legal frameworks necessary for the enforcement of MEDECA. GREENMEDPORTS can utilize this information to ensure that the Carbon Footprint Platform (CFP) and Green Label certification system are compliant with current and forthcoming regulations. This alignment will help in creating a robust framework for emission reduction and sustainable port operations.
- Results will be smoothly exploited thanks to the fact that the GREENMEDPORTs Lead partner is also the lead partner of the LIFE4MEDECA Project. (EN), LIFE23-PRE-IT-LIFE4MECA/101148508 (EN) | The Project has become operational since March 2024 and therefore the outputs will be produced from Q3 and Q4 2024 onwards. The Proposal Lead partner will make sure that the knowledge and achievements of the LIFE4MECA project will be used to increase the capacity of the consortium to implement effective emission control measures, develop robust monitoring and decision-support systems, and create a sustainable and resilient maritime and transport ecosystem in the Mediterranean.
