- CARDIMED - Climate Adaptation and Resilience Demonstrated In the MEDiterranean region (Horizon Europe) (EN) | BRIEF PROJECT DESCRIPTION
- CARDIMED aims to improve Climate Resilience in Mediterranean regions, by developing and employing digital infrastructure to harmonise data collection and evaluation processes, providing open data to all the actors involved in the Nature-based Solutions (NBS) value chain, highlighting the link between energy, water and food security and the ecosystems, and integrating crucial functions for Climate Resilience. Among these functions, smart digital tools for citizen participation and capacity building aim to supplement an ambitious multi-stakeholder engagement strategy. In this context the project will also implement interventions in 9 demonstration sites to tackle climate change and circularity challenges, and will establish a CARDIMED Resilience Alliance to upscale the demonstration sites and transfer project knowledge to new territories.
- OUTPUTS TO BE UTILISED
- In view of the geographic and thematic relevance of the two projects, NBS4MED will seek to establish synergies between the NBS city network and the CARDIMED Resilience Alliance, exploiting IMM’s participation in both partnerships. This will be facilitated through:
- a) Facilitating a two-way exchange of tools practices, solutions and lessons learnt from the pilot activities between the two projects.
- b) Inviting relevant partners from CARDIMED (beyond IMM) in the 1st conference of the NBS4MED network to present project results and lay the groundwork for future cooperation efforts.
- c) Coordinating with the CARDIMED partnership to organise a common event to raise awareness on NBS and their importance in advancing climate resilience in the Mediterranean. (EN), URBAN GreenUP - New Strategy for Re-Naturing Cities through Nature-Based Solutions (Horizon 2020) (EN) | BRIEF PROJECT DESCRIPTION
- The primary goal of the project was the development, application and replication of Renaturing Urban Plans in a number of European and non-European partner cities with the aim of a) mitigating the effects of climate change, b) improving air quality and water management, and c) increasing the sustainability of cities through innovative nature-based solutions.
- OUTPUTS TO BE UTILISED
- IMM, which has also been a member of the URBAN GreenUP partnership, will provide guidance and facilitate the utilisation of the following URBAN GreenUP outputs (which are freely available in the project website) by NBS4MED partners.
- Urban Greenup Renaturing Methodology
- The purpose of the methodology is to support the development of urban plans that incorporate NBS along with traditional urban planning aspects to advance a more sustainable approach to Urban Planning. The partnership will borrow features of the methodology, such as the steps and processes to develop urban plans, and incorporate them in the development of the guidelines for the operation of Local Working Groups (D5.2.1.1) and the development of the local Action Plans, making alterations, where necessary, to better align them with the project objectives and improve their compatibility with the decision-making methodology (Output 3.3).
- Final NBS Catalogue
- The catalogue presents solutions that have been implemented during the project, along with a discussion on implementation barriers. Partners will review the catalogue, keying in on NBS which are relevant to NBS4MED (i.e., those mitigating risks related to extreme weather events that are relevant to the Mediterranean area), in order to more accurately define potential implementation challenges and risk mitigation measures in the context of the common decision-making methodology (Output 3.1). (EN), ICARIA - Improving critical assets' and infrastructures’ resilience to natural disasters (Horizon Europe) (EN) | BRIEF PROJECT DESCRIPTION
- The project aims to employ asset-level modelling to understand climate-related, direct and indirect, impacts provoked by complex, compound and cascading disasters and the risk reduction that suitable, sustainable and cost-effective adaptation solutions provide. In this context, the project focuses on critical assets and infrastructures that have not been designed to account for potential climate changes, leading to increased climate-related risks.
- OUTPUTS TO BE UTILISED
- AMB, which is a member of the ICARIA partnership and one of the 3 study areas of the ICARIA project, will provide guidance and facilitate the access to and utilisation of the following ICARIA output.
- Climate Resilience Assessment Tool
- The tool is intended to support the holistic assessment of the climate resilience of complex systems focusing on critical assets. The tool is applicable in various geographical areas, and different assets and services, taking into account different climate risks and stressors either separately or cumulatively. The tool will be employed by the Local Working Groups in the context of Output 5.2, helping them to better assess local climate risks and vulnerabilities, and pinpoint fit-for-purpose measures and solutions to be included in the action plans. (EN), PERFECT - Planning for Environment and Resource eFficiency in European Cities and Towns (Interreg Europe) (EN) | BRIEF PROJECT DESCRIPTION
- The project aims to improve the integration of green infrastructure into the planning and investment of urban and rural areas in Europe. In this context, the project:
- - Identified and analysed good practices in multi-use of green infrastructure.
- - Fully engaged Managing Authorities on the socio-economic benefits of green infrastructure to influence new projects and improve governance of policy instruments.
- - Increased the professional capacity of key stakeholders in delivering new projects.
- - Developed Action Plans to influence strategic investment in green infrastructure based on its multiple benefits.
- OUTPUTS TO BE UTILISED
- The partnership will utilise the following PERFECT output (freely available on the project website):
- Expert Papers
- The PERFECT project developed 5 expert papers on various aspects related to the implementation of NBS. The partnership will specifically make use of the expert paper on green infrastructure financing, which provides information on funding options for green infrastructure (such as green bonds, crowdfunding green loans). Partners will review the information, good practices and recommendations included in the report to support the development of policy solutions to improve the financing of urban NBS solutions, which will be included in the common policy toolkit (Output 5.2). (EN), REGREEN – Fostering nature-based solutions for smart, green and healthy urban transitions in Europe and China (Horizon 2020) (EN) | BRIEF PROJECT DESCRIPTION
- The purpose of the project was to improve the evidence and tools for supporting co-creation of nature-based solutions (NBS) in urban settings, implementation of decision support systems for planning and governance, and development of business models for realising spatially relevant NBS, that provide multiple ecosystem services and wellbeing. In this context, the project utilised Urban Living Labs (ULLs) as the central elements of the project, where co-creation of knowledge involves local citizens, schools, businesses, organisations and public administrations enabling new forms of urban innovation.
- OUTPUTS TO BE UTILISED
- The partnership will utilise the following outputs (freely available on the project website):
- REGREEN Start-Up Accelerator Program
- The REGREEN start‐up accelerator program focused on assisting SMEs and companies through mentorship, educational courses, and business training, emphasising the business potential of NBS. In this context, the program sought to empower companies in the private sector, practitioners and municipalities, and to foster knowledge exchange and network integration. The partnership will utilise key takeaways regarding policy requirements to support innovation in NBS and advance the uptake of NBS by the private sector, integrating them, with the necessary adaptations, in the common policy toolkit and utilising them in the preparation of the local Action Plans. (EN), GrowGreen – Green Cities for Climate and Water Resilience, Sustainable Economic Growth, Healthy Citizens and Environments (Horizon 2020) (EN) | BRIEF PROJECT DESCRIPTION
- The project aimed to support the adoption of NBS as a tool to create climate and water resilient urban areas. In this context, the project aspired to contribute to the evidence base of nature-based solutions in cities and support the implementation of NBS-focused strategies, through demonstration activities and the establishment of partnerships between cities in Europe and China.
- OUTPUTS TO BE UTILISED
- The NBS4MED partnership will employ the following GrowGreen outputs:
- ENGAGING CITIZENS IN NATURE BASED SOLUTIONS
- The output (freely available online) highlights lessons learnt from citizen and stakeholder engagement strategies in project areas and in selected case studies, and provides guidelines for engaging citizens and stakeholders in the implementation of NBS. The output will be employed by the NBS4MED partnership a) during the implementation of communication activities in the pilot action sites in order to streamline the implementation of the communication strategy and increase public engagement and the visibility of project results, and b) in the organisation and operation of the Local Working Group (WP5) to support and promote stakeholder involvement in the preparation of the action plans.
- GROWGREEN CITIES INTERVENTION REPORTS
- The reports (freely available online) provide conclusions and lessons learnt from the interventions undertaken in the GrowGreen frontrunner cities (i.e., Manchester, Wroclaw, and Valencia). They will be utilised to a) inform the common decision-making framework (Output 3.3), and b) streamline the implementation of the pilot actions, employing the lessons learnt to pre-identify and manage implementation risks.
