It is undeniable that the relentless growth of cities has had an effect on the environment, often exceeding the environmental carrying capacity, as inadequate consideration has been given to the impact of urban expansion on the conservation of the natural and recreational spaces available to inhabitants. To make our cities more environmentally friendly it is necessary to transform urban centres through a new symbiosis between the city and nature, where architecture, transports, soil use, degraded soil regeneration, education and cultureare all interlinked. Urban planning has not always been based on the need that citizens have to live in friendlier cities with open spaces and leisure areas. One of the main requirements is to functionally integrate parks, so they really do become leisure areas for the family, where nature can be appreciated, as well as important tourist attractions that complement the cultural, historical and architectural richness of our cities. The cities forming this project partnership share this spirit. The PARKATLANTIC project therefore centres its activities on the urban and peri-urban parks of the AA, with the objective of increasing their value and promoting their role in sustainable urban development. It has the objective of formulating urban models through transnational cooperation in which natural resources and planning for sustainable city growth are the foundation. The partner cities have important natural resources and urban parks.

Achievements (EN):

To achieve the objectives of the project, the partners have created the Virtual Urban Laboratory, a body made up of the technicians coordinating the principal products of the project. The results achieved relate to urban planning and sustainable development. These involve carrying out a study and GIS inventory of the urban parks and other urban natural spaces in the Atlantic cities associated with the project, including analysis of parks in each of the five territories in terms of area occupied, history, trees and plants, the parcels for specific uses and the degree of innovation in their use, and the urban strategies implemented; comparative analysis of the parks studied; analysis of surveys of park users, and finally, developing proposals and recommendations for the future development of parks. A benchmarking chapter summarises the best practices identified for managing urban green spaces in Europe and the world. An Action Plan for Sustainable Management of Urban Parks and Green Spaces was developed from this study and the partners collectively developed a Training Plan for the technicians responsible for planning, managing and maintaining parks and green spaces, which has been launched. PARKATLANTIC aims in this way to respond to the common challenges faced by the cooperation area and will contribute to the formulation of urban planning models based upon the natural resources of the city, increasing environmental sustainability and improving the quality of life of residents.
