Often major challenges for EU Member States are energy policy designated by European Parliament and EU-Commission. EU Strategy – “3x20 policy” which intends to improve energy efficiency by 20%, increase the share of renewable energy up to 20% and reduce CO2 emission by 20% till 2020 is based on the fact that up to date regional achievements will be developed and new efficient technologies and management methods will be elaborated, accepted and implemented. However, dispersed energy is in the phase of initial development in many EU countries. It might be difficult to realise these assumptions just in one country and with local achievements. And that is how idea of ENERGYREGION project has been realised. The project is concentrating on diversification of energy sources with significant increase of renewable energy sources (RES) contribution and on effective, sustainable and safe development of power engineering regarding energy saving and environmental protection. ENERGYREGION project undertakes these challenges and goals with regard to selected regions, which are represented by local government. International cooperation will enable transfer of knowledge and exchange of best practices and innovations. This should enable creation of conditions for quick realisation of difficult goals accepted by EU.

Achievements (EN):

ENERGYREGION – “Effective development of dispersed renewable energy in combination with conventional energy in Regions” is an international project focusing on energy market in terms of environment protection, energy security and decentralized energy generation. The ENERGYREGION cooperates with local authorities and will develop sustainable strategies for renewable energy integration into energy systems. Regions selected as study areas of the ENERGYREGION project are: Lower Silesia Region in Poland; Local Action Groups Opavsko and Moravian Karst in the Czech Republic; Podravje Region in Slovenia and North Hessen in Germany. For these regions a renewable energy database, providing access to most up-to-date information on conventional and, most importantly, unconventional energy (such as biomass, biogas and biofuels, wind power, photovoltaics and solar thermal energy, hydropower, geothermal energy) plants or installations is developed. Collected data include information on installation’s capacity and generated energy, basic technological characteristics, equipment, purpose of utilization. Knowing the resources is essential for renewable energy planning in a region or municipality. The database is also a tool for promoting and informing about current application of renewable energy sources and their potential. The ENERGYREGION will moreover develop methodologies and guidelines serving renewable energy policies and measures to ensure reliable energy supplies and energy efficiency. The measures that are most frequently implemented in practice are presented in the "Catalogue of Measures". The catalogue is a comprehensive and lucid source of data which consists of all relevant and necessary information about possible measures in the field of energy savings and renewable energy sources. It is a tool for common use available via project website. Other important activities undertaken in the project are the pilot activities. Measurements of wind potential are being performed with use of two independent wind measuring systems (WMS). With use of the WMS wind speed and direction, temperature and humidity are constantly monitored at the two sites in the Lower Silesia municipalities. Received data will be vital for feasibility studies for wind power development. Moreover, the research programme of optimizing biomass gasification has been developed – comparative tests of various biomass types are being performed at the installation consisting of combustion furnace and gasification boiler. The complete installation is placed in the laboratory of Poltegor Institute. The tests, which involve different biomass feedstock: straw, hay, grain, energy crops, wood, pellets, wood chips and biocarbon, investigate technical aspects, ash content, moisture content and heating value and have an educational character.
