Description (EN):

This project brings various stakeholders together, to deliver programmess across four different regions – Northern Ireland, Sweden, Republic of Ireland & The Faroe Islands, in addition Associate Partners from Finland, Scotland, Norway & Iceland will also be involved in the project to ensure effective project reach both during and after programme duration. The programmes will tackle Climate Change on local and regional levels through increasing public awareness and using models of best practice to develop Climate Adaptation Plans for local authorities. This model will subsequently be utilised to develop Climate Adaptation Plans for three local authorities. The project will utilise the “triple helix” community partnership concept as delivery of the project will involve a working relationship between university, community/industry and government to harness local knowledge and research in terms of climate change causes and effects within the regions so that the results of this research and the management tools developed can be disseminated throughout the Northern Periphery and Arctic area and beyond. The main project objective is “Promote and improve climate change awareness in European peripheral rural communities through a knowledge based approach and community led sustainable resource planning that will mitigate against future climate impact and incorporating transnational collaboration through a best practice model which will improve preparedness for sustainable environmental management in future years” Involved UK and Irish partners’ will therefore learn significantly from the climate adaptation expertise of Scandinavian & Faroes partners whilst UK and Irish partners’ will share their knowledge & experience of effectively utilising a ‘bottom-up’ community led approach to achieving desired results. The project will also develop a preparedness scale matrix for local authorities & partners will be able to disseminate best practice models widely.

Expected Results (EN): Preparedness of responsible authorities in remote, sparsely populated areas for environmental management in relation to climate change and impacts of new investments in exploitation of natural resources

Expected Outputs (EN):

Project Main Result is as follows, ""Introduction of Environmental Management Tools for local, regional and central government in the form of a Climate Adaptation Plan, Risk Register and Preparedness Scale Matrix which can be adapted throughout the NPA region in order to enhance the capacity and preparedness of local and regional communities to handle the risks connected to climate change"". The CLIMATE project will therefore have a positive result on the NPA programme result indicators; (i) Number of schemes/interventions involving sustainable environmental management. Positive contribution : Production of Climate Adaptation Plan, Preparedness Scale and Risk Register which can be adapted for local, regional and central government throughout the NPA region. (ii) Number of capacity-building solutions to maintain the balance between competing environmental, economic and social interests. Positive contribution : Exploring models for monetary valuation of climate change adaptation, audit of the economic value in developing the plans and the potential economic cost of doing nothing eg “pay now for preventative measures or pay later following impact of climate change”. Development of a Knowledge Hub/Environmental Management Tool. Development of a portal for research and data for synthesis of best practice models. (iii) Number of new decision making tools or governance concepts facilitating sustainable environmental management. Positive contribution : Production of Climate Adaptation Plan, Preparedness Scale and Risk Register which can be adapted for local, regional and central government throughout the NPA region.
