The challenges of sustainable transport in the North Sea Area cannot be met by technical solutions alone – it needs also requires behavioural changes. Shared mobility modes and their potential to address these challenges are the focus of the SHARE-North project. This includes developing, implementing, promoting and assessing car sharing, bike sharing, ride sharing and other forms of shared mobility in urban and rural areas and employment clusters. The planned living labs will integrate modern technology with activities to support changes in mobility behaviour. The objectives are manifold: resource efficiency, improving accessibility (incl. non-traditional target groups), increased efficiency in the use of transport infrastructure, reduction of space consumption for transport, improving quality of life and low carbon transport. A strong partnership of public authorities, NGOs and research institutions in the project consortium is supplemented by numerous supporting organisations including the OECD International Transport Forum. The partnership stands for transnational cooperation, which is necessary for creating political support, and represents a high level of innovation as shared mobility is not yet widely employed as a part of integrated transport strategies. The Mobility Academy will be involved for dissemination purposes as its annual World Collaborative Mobility Congress will give SHARE-North and its themes a global platform to demonstrate the impacts of shared mobility.

Achievements (EN):

SHARE-North was truly a project about sharing. Not only shared mobility but also about sharing knowledge, experiences and a passion with each other as consortium but also with external organisations. One of the legacies of the project is the successful launch of the mobil.punkt, mobipunt, mobihub aka mobility hub concept across the North Sea region. What began as a transport strategy in the city of Bremen, has been expanded upon and communicated fantastically by the SHARE-North partners since 2017, so that it spread like wild fire and lead to mobilpunkte in Bergen and other Norwegian cities, mobihubs in Belgium and the Netherlands and has inspired wide-scale mobility hub policies in the UK as well as the development of follow-up EU-funded projects! As a result of the launch of the mobihub concept in Flanders, the Flemish Ministry of Transport formed a resolution and dedicated more than 100 Mio EUROS toward the planning and implementation of 1000 mobility hubs in Flanders. National initiatives were developed. In the Netherlands, the Green Deal Carsharing and in Flanders, the Green Deal Shared Mobility brought together hundreds of organisations dedicated to promoting and taking concrete actions to grow shared mobility. This also inspired policy development in the UK and the Shared Mobility Pledges. Solutions for businesses and employees were also created and highly successful. For example, 10 Shared Travel Plans were developed, allowing businesses who are based on business parks or who operate from multiple sites to work as a collective to develop shared strategies exploring solutions to core challenges, including utilising shared resources and sharing good practice through peer-to-peer support. Another major success of the project that features many practical examples is the culmination of nearly six years of work: The Planner’s Guide to the Shared Mobility Galaxy. The 250-page comprehensive guide to the types and impacts of shared transport modes for planners and decision makers was published in English, German, Dutch and Swedish and highlights the pros and cons of the main forms of shared mobility and features a wide variety of best practice examples from across the NSR and beyond. https://share-north.eu/the-guide/ The strongest suit of the project partners was communication. Communication about the impacts of shared mobility through studies carried out by Lund University, Bergen, Bremen and CoMoUK; presentations at countless international events including Polis, Civitas, ECOMM, Autonomy, Velo-City and many more in individual as well as joint sessions; or the project’s own webinar series – all of which are available on the project website: https://share-north.eu/resources/ Creative and fun communication campaigns such as the “Carpool Addict” campaign, “Ghent, Carsharing City”, Leiedal’s Mobility Coach or shared mobility film, “With Shared Mobility, Udo is always flexible” promoted the benefits of shared transport for citizens by appealing to them on an emotional level. The most unique communication creation of the project, however, was probably Shared Mobility Rocks. This is an unconventional symposium about shared mobility for planners, operators and research institutions hosted four times during the project. Once as a 24-hour around the world and around the clock online event during Covid-19 and as the final conference of the project in Bremen in May 2022. This rocking event combined fun and rock music with interesting and top-notch expertise on shared mobility from the consortium and beyond.
