Description (EN):

Increased use of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) provides significant benefits for many in the region such as local sawmills, builders, real estate companies, municipalities, etc. CLT is an important building component that enables, among other things, the construction of tall wooden houses. CLT is used very little as a building material today and is thus a missed opportunity for the development of the region’s companies and an expanded wood construction in general. There is great potential in using the material in many building applications where today the most common use of concrete, steel or other materials. CLT can also be used in completely new applications that cannot be manufactured today with existing materials, e.g. applications with difficult geometry. Only a few manufacturers in Europe (Sweden, Finland and Austria) manufacture CLT today. The properties of the material have been studied and tested to some extent, but much about its properties and possibilities remains to be investigated. CLT is used in high-rise wooden structures and the product can simultaneously serve as the building’s façade, interior cladding and floor construction. The product is also competitive in single-family buildings and in public buildings such as the noise ceiling. The social structure with strong expansion in metropolitan regions means that the market for higher apartment buildings will increase. The wood construction industry has a great opportunity to contribute to this societal transformation. Existing Swedish wood-based construction systems can handle 6-8 floors depending on the construction system, but the market demand is to build significantly higher houses. To this end, new thinking, innovative solutions and further developed building systems are needed. The project has partners in Sweden and Finland but will also seek potential partners in Norway for a CLT innovation network of knowledge and support for business development. Developing and expanding the activities of the Innovation Network improves opportunities to participate in Horizon 2020 projects. Furthermore, the project will identify and develop new design solutions by simulating and analysing the material for new competitive solutions. The solutions will then be tested using rapid prototypes to streamline the product development process. This part is controlled by customers and pilot projects are based on customer needs. There is currently uncertainty about the quality and properties of the discs and therefore this needs to be ensured. Among other things, use in humid environments should be investigated in order to increase the use in outdoor products. Finally, studies will be made on how a renewal can be achieved in construction processes and seek alternatives that enable CLT instead of traditional materials, which can lead to the need for new methods, machines and working methods. The project leads to cross-border cooperation between different actors in the development area as well as increased critical mass and a pooled competence for development efforts. To expand the timber industry’s market in Finland, building products need to be developed and adapted for new applications. One way to solve the problem is to apply CLT versatilely in the building construction industry.

En ökad användning av Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) ger betydande fördelar för många i regionen så som lokala sågverk, byggare, fastighetsbolag, kommuner etc. CLT är en viktig byggkomponent som bland annat möjliggör byggande av höga hus i trä. CLT används väldigt lite som byggnadsmaterial idag och är därmed en missad möjlighet för utveckling av regionens företag och ett utökat träbyggande i allmänhet. Det finns en stor potential i att använda materialet i många byggnadsapplikationer där man idag oftast använder betong, stål eller andra material. CLT går också att använda i helt nya applikationer som inte kan tillverkas idag med befintliga material, t.ex. applikationer med svår geometri. Det är endast ett fåtal tillverkare i Europa (Sverige, Finland och Österrike) som tillverkar CLT idag. Materialets egenskaper har studerats och testats till viss del men mycket om dess egenskaper och möjligheter återstår att undersöka. CLT används i höghusens träkonstruktioner och produkten kan samtidigt fungera som byggandens fasad, innerbeklädnad och golvkonstruktion. Produkten är konkurrenskraftig även i småhusbyggen och i offentliga byggen t.ex. bullerstaket. Samhällsstrukturen med kraftig expansion i storstadsregioner innebär att marknaden för högre flerbostadshus kommer att öka. Träbyggnadsindustrin har en stor möjlighet att bidra till denna samhällsomvandling. Existerande svenska träbaserade byggsystem klarar 6-8 våningar beroende på byggsystem men marknadsefterfrågan finns att bygga betydligt högre hus. Till detta behövs nytänkande, innovativa lösningar och vidareutvecklade byggsystem. Projektet har samarbetspartners i Sverige och Finland men kommer även att söka potentiella samarbetspartners i Norge för ett CLT-innovationsnätverk av kunskap och stöd för företagens utveckling. Genom att utveckla och utvidga innovationsnätverkets verksamhet förbättras möjligheterna att delta i Horisont 2020-projekt. Vidare kommer projektet att identifiera och utveckla nya konstruktionslösningar genom att simulera och analysera materialet för nya konkurrenskraftiga lösningar. Sedan ska lösningarna testas med hjälp av snabba prototyper för att effektivisera produktutvecklingsprocessen. Denna del styrs av kunderna och pilotprojekt baseras på kundbehov. Det finns idag en osäkerhet kring skivornas kvalitét och egenskaper och därför behöver detta säkerställas. Bland annat ska användning i fuktiga miljöer undersökas för att kunna öka användingen i utomhusprodukter. Slutligen ska studier göras om hur en förnyelse kan åstadkommas i byggprocesser och söka alternativ som möjliggör att få in CLT istället för traditionellt material, vilket kan leda till behov av nya metoder, maskiner och arbetssätt. Projektet leder till gränsöverskridande samarbete mellan olika aktörer inom utvecklingsområdet samt till ökad kritisk massa och en samlad kompetens för utvecklingsinsatser. För att utöka trävaruindustrins marknad i Finland krävs att byggnadsprodukter utvecklas och anpassas för nya användningsområden. Ett sätt att lösa problemet är att tillämpa CLT mångsidigt i husbyggnadsbranschen.

Achievements (EN):

Objective: The main goal was to increase knowledge about how CLT can be manufactured efficiently and how the properties of CLT can be varied. This means developing new variants of CLT with new features, introducing CLT into today’s existing construction processes and creating an opportunity for applications in Horizon 2020. Results: The project contributed to the submission of an H2020 application in October 2016 in collaboration with 9 partners. The application was rejected in January 2017. 55 companies have participated in the project’s activities, including 10 companies supported to introduce new products. A number of new types of CLT designs such as new angles for laminating and CLT with aluminum reinforcement have been studied during the project period. The project has also studied CLT’s behaviour in moisture. Results from tests, analyses and evaluations have led to the publication of the report “Water and Moisture in CLT”. Several other scientific reports and publications have been produced during the project; for example, “Impact of Board Width on In-plane Shear Stiffness of Cross-Laminated Timber” and “Shear frame and Diagonal compression testing of Cross-Laminated Timber”. Following the pilot tests “Temporary Bridges” and “Fire protection of load-bearing structures”, the publication “Increasing the use of CLT with fast product development” was written. Case studies of experiences of CLT use in the construction industry have been carried out. One conclusion from the study is that CLT has a positive image and can be seen as an ecological choice for creating sustainable building environments. Wood surfaces are seen as aesthetic choices for high quality indoor environments. During the project period, 3 new CLT plants have been initiated in Finland and Sweden. Achievements (SV):

Mål: Huvudsakligt mål var att öka kunskapen om hur CLT kan tillverkas effektivt och hur egenskaperna hos CLT kan varieras. Detta innebär att ta fram nya varianter av CLT med nya egenskaper, att införa CLT i dagens befintliga byggprocesser samt att skapa möjlighet för ansökan i Horisont 2020. Resultat: Projektet bidrog till att en H2020-ansökan lämnades in i oktober 2016 i ett samarbete med 9 partners. Ansökan blev avslagen i januari 2017. 55 företag har deltagit i projektets aktiviteter, däribland har 10 företag fått stöd för att introducera nya produkter. Ett antal nya typer av CLT-designs som tex nya vinklar för laminering och CLT med förstärkning av aluminium har studerats under projekttiden. Projektet har även studerat CLT:s beteende vid fukt. Resultat från tester, analyser och utvärderingar har lett till publicering av rapporten ”Water and Moisture in CLT”. Ett flertal andra vetenskapliga rapporter och publikationer har tagits fram under projektet; t.ex. ”Impact of Board Width on In-plane Shear Stiffness of Cross-Laminated Timber” och ”Shear frame and Diagonal compression testing of Cross-Laminated Timber”. Fallstudier av erfarenheter av CLT-användning i byggindustrin har genomförts. En slutsats från studien är att CLT har en positiv image och kan ses som ett ekologiskt val för att skapa hållbara byggmiljöer. Träytor ses som estetiska val för högkvalitativa inomhusmiljöer.
