Description (EN):

BYTHOS aims at promoting sustainable management of resources and ‘cleaner production’ in the fishing industry and food services sector in Sicily and Malta, thereby minimising risks associated with waste for the environment: The project also aims at promoting integration between research and the business sector so that results from research in the field of biotechnology for human health are taken forward to the market, thereby contributing to generating jobs and business opportunities. The project will carry out: - A joint lab with ‘spaces’ in Malta and Sicily where researchers and experts in blue biotechnology, business experts and experts from the fishing and waste industries come together with SMEs operating throughout the fisheries sector and organic waste sector for the exploration of new opportunities tailor-made for the economies of the two islands. - The extraction of bioactive molecules (BAMs), including collagen, from fish waste sourced from the fishing industry or food services sector, and eco-innovation fish food from the remaining fish waste. - The definition of biotechnology procedures for the production and commercial exploitation of a range of innovative, stakeholder-driven products for human health sourced from fish waste.

Expected Results (EN): N. 6 enterprises which will adopt technologies and innovative services developed by the joint BYTHOS lab

Expected Outputs (EN):

N. 1 Lab jointly created in Sicily and Malta. N. 40 Enterprises and organizations which use the lab services in Sicily and Malta. N. 4 bioactive molecule's extraction procedures defined. N. 2 fish feed products. N. 5 target markets in biomed tech sector identified. N. 5 target markets in fish feed sector identified. N. 15 business models which involves a preliminary analysis of the local economic context and the drawing up of set of targeted, tailor-made business models and exploitation plans. N. 1 model procedure for organic refuse (fish waste) collection including incentive schemes. N. 4 environmental impact assessments (EIA) of bioactive molecules (BAMs) extraction and zerowaste fish food product. N. 2 socio-economic impact assessments on communities of project activities including equal opportunities and social inclusion.
