Cities on both sides of the Mediterranean face important environmental challenges and increasing costs to collect and treat waste, including expensive investments in landfills or incinerators. The MED-InA project proposes to develop and roll out a methodology for a “Zero Waste” public policy adapted to Mediterranean cities as an exemplary and participatory approach for waste reduction, reuse and recycling. The Zero Waste approach offers an alternative option and aims to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills or incinerators through waste prevention, reuse, recycling and development of local activities. To adapt this ambitious approach to the Mediterranean context, the MED-InA project will develop a methodology co-designed by the partners, based on a wide consultation with local stakeholders (public, private, associations, citizens) and territorial coordination. It will place the citizens at the heart of the process and will strongly value a “low tech-low cost” approach by promoting in the South and reintegrating in the North traditional practices that generate little quantity of waste.

Expected Results (EN):

1 decision support tool on Zero Waste public policies. 3 Integrated Municipal Waste Management Plans including both organic and plastic waste sorting and treatment solutions. 3 capacity-building plans and training programs for municipal staffs and elected members. 15 local awareness-raising campaigns on the Zero Waste approach. 3,000 households using new services and equipment for sorting at source, recycling, reusing and composting. 12 startups selected and supported to create businesses in the circular economy sector. 2,400 low-cost equipment and services set up for sorting at source and implementing decentralized composting.

Expected Outputs (EN):

3.1 - Exchange programs to improve technical and operational capacities of the 3 municipalities, 3.3 - Guidebook to roll-out Zero Waste public policy, 4.1 - Preliminary studies, legal framework analysis, and large-scale public consultations, 4.2 - Integrated solid municipal waste management plans, 4.3 - Capacity-Building Plans and training programs for municipal staffs and elected members, 4.4 - Local awareness-raising campaign about Zero Waste ambitions of the municipality, 5.2 - Design of pilot projects : scope, territory and objectives, 5.3 - Coaching strategy for population to tend towards Zero Waste, 5.4 - Population coaching service adapted to local contexts, 5.5 - Behaviour change coaching campaigns towards 6,000 households, 5.6 - Waste management initiatives lead by the key stakeholders of the pilot territory, 5.7 - Collective challenges in the pilot territory, 5.8 - Low-cost equipment & services set up for sorting at source and practicing decentralized composting, 5.9 - Pilot project technical reports, 6.1 - Selection of incubators involded to promote circular economy among entrepreneurs, 6.2 - Multi-Stakeholder Networking, Ideation, and Applications, 6.3 - Pitching events for sub-grant awarding, 6.4 - Incubation of entrepreneurs that deliver innovative services for circular economy, 6.5 - Deployment in the pilot areas of the innovative services in favor of circular economy.
