As cities continue to grow, so is the number of challenges they are facing. Environmental, economic or social emerging issues call for new and unproven urban solutions. The increasing need for urban innovation will result in the development of a significant number of smart cities initiatives, creating new business opportunities for Mediterranean SMEs. If we want our cities to be efficiently managed and more livable for communities, public authorities and SMEs have to work together to come up with the best technological solutions. SME4SMARTCITIES will make this collaboration possible by reinforcing the capacities of Mediterranean cities and SMEs. On the one the hand, the project will help cities to be the front-runners of innovation, in particular through the use of Public Procurement of Innovative solutions. On the other hand, the project will support Mediterranean SMEs in order to guarantee that their products and services meet the expectations and needs of smart cities.

Achievements (EN):

During its 3-years course, the SME4SMARTCITIES project developed and nurtured the concepts of co-creation and trilateral – local government (cities), academia, and industry (innovative SMEs) collaboration and put them into practice through this co-development and implementation of 6 solutions and case studies in municipalities. These endeavors get interest from global industry and government leaders after being presented at innovation sessions and visits to global audiences. In August the project and its achievements were presented and discussed at a visit of senior business managers and academy scholars from Japan at the remarkable Municipal Innovation Center of Mashcal – The local government economic services subsidiary of The Federation of Local Authorities in Israel. In early September, it was also demonstrated at meetings and study tours with national road managers from Kenya, Namibia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with organizational leaders from UAE and Bahrain, and with Bouygues Group management from France. The experience gained during the SME4SMARTCITIES project and the guides and toolboxes the project published can help facilitate trilateral co-development to solve major urban challenges and climate change mitigation needs not only in the Mediterranean area but across many other regions as well.

Expected Results (EN):

1 training programme dedicated to support SMEs in entering the smart cities solutions market. 1 platform for providing consultancy services to SMEs in idea generation, concept definition, concept development, market testing and access to new markets. 1 co-creation, co-innovation programme to foster cooperation among Mediterranean SMEs. 5 Smart Cities solutions (innovative and technological products and/or services for improving the cities answers to the urban challenges they face) developed and tested.

Expected Outputs (EN):

3.1 - Diagnostic about the opportunities for MED SMEs in the market of smart city solutions, 3.2 - Diagnosis of the existing & needed support services for innovative & technological SMEs in the MED, 4.1 - SME4SMARTCITIES Training programme, 4.2 - MED Online support service for innovative and technological SMEs., 5.1 - Co-creation, co-innovation and cooperation supporting programme, 6.1 - Smart Cities solutions, 6.2 - Support innovative and technological SMES Manual.
