Description (EN):

In Mediterranean countries, domestic water use accounts for a minor part of water consumption - a much larger quantity is used for irrigation - but it requires the best quality and its demand is continuously growing, along with improving lifestyle and increasing urban population. Moreover, urban water is still the main cause of pollution of rivers and groundwater, even when treated before being discharged. Per capita domestic water use can be drastically reduced by using non-conventional water (NCW) resources for not potable purposes: greywater (and rainwater when available) can be reused for WC flushing and irrigation but requires the implementation of decentralised treatment systems, serving one or a few buildings. NAWAMED aims at changing the urban water management practice by mean of innovative, sustainable, and low-cost treatment technologies, applicable in a decentralised way, to replace the use of potable water with good quality of NCW.

Achievements (EN):

After four years of dedication, collaboration and overcoming various challenges, NAWAMED has reached its zenith, marking a significant milestone in sustainable water management. The project, which began in 2019, has navigated through unforeseen obstacles, including the global COVID-19 pandemic. However, these challenges only served to strengthen the partnership, making the achievement even more commendable. The crowning accomplishment is the release of its Final Publication, a comprehensive document encapsulating the insights and innovations gained over the four-year duration. It focuses in particular on the description of the new measures to promote non-conventional water (NCW) uses and the innovative and available nature-based solutions (NbS) for greywater treatment and reuse, and provides a general overview of the lessons learned and possible new collaborations for the future. This publication is now available for public access on the project website (Library section), providing a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders interested in sustainable water solutions. Furthermore, NAWAMED has made a significant impact at the Mediterranean level with the publication of a Policy Document, available on the library’s website as well. This document aims to promote the inclusion of water demand management and non-conventional water-related measures in national policy frameworks across the region. In addition to the publication, the project has produced a captivating short film, “Gocce di Rugiada” (Drops of Dew) which is now public and accessible to a global audience. To watch the short film and delve into the project's transformative narrative it is possible to find it on pareteverdeferla.it and the dedicated youtube channel where you can find subtitles in different languages. The impact of the project goes beyond research and publications. Excitingly, NAWAMED has already been capitalised on in MEDWAYCAP and now in new projects that have just started, furthering its legacy and ensuring that the knowledge gained continues to be applied. The successful collaboration and outcomes of the project have opened doors to new opportunities, contributing to the ongoing efforts in sustainable water management. As NAWAMED concludes, it is important to acknowledge the commitment and resilience of the partners involved. The lessons learnt, the innovations developed and the partnerships forged during these four years will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the field of water management.

Expected Results (EN):

8 real scale pilot installation for greywater/rainwater treatment and reuse including living green walls (vertical vegetation set up on building façades) and constructed wetlands treating flows from a public building, a parking area, and a refugee camp. 30% reduction in water consumption at pilot sites level. 9,000 m3/year of non-conventional water to be reused at urban/domestic level. 15 technical visits to pilot sites. 10 training workshops organised for technical staff and decision-makers. 1 Mediterranean Policy Document to foster the inclusion of water demand management and non-conventional water resources measures in national policy frameworks.
