Public services face an unprecedented set of challenges: increasing demand, rising expectations, seemingly intractable social problems and, in many cases, reduced budgets. In Europe, previous approaches have produced important improvements in some areas but failed to tackle the structural inequalities that are fuelling the demand for services. In the Arab world, heterogeneous and fractured social structures, along with occupational shifts from agricultural to industrial and service activities, are overstretching already weak social services schemes that fail to address the real drivers of poverty, inequality, and exclusion. MedTOWN is an initiative focused on the combined potential of agents of the social and solidarity economy (SSE), citizens and local authorities to co-produce the social policies that can fight poverty, inequality, social exclusion, and environmental unsustainability, providing them with tools and connections to build local resilience and foster the transition towards more fair, resilient and sustainable societies in the Euro-Mediterranean region. Information added on 2020-07-06, regarding the mitigation of the effects of COVID-19 (the coronavirus pandemic that started in 2019) (English language only): This project set up an emergency shelter in Tunisia, where women and their children can immediately be hosted, even during the pandemic, to get away from homes where it is too dangerous for them to remain.

Achievements (EN):

MedTOWN project is full of complex concepts like 'coproduction', 'multiplier effect', 'action research', 'social experimentation', 'eco-social trainings', 'policy dialogues'... But in essence, our aim is to make a small contribution to improving people's lives. We think we have been able to do so. As we release MedTOWN to the world & the future, we want to highlight our beautiful 'The Phoenix Journey' training programme, whose courses remain available to keep learning from them. Our research findings, that credit what we have learned. Our National & international conferences & debates, to create a regulatory & political environment conducive to the success of the SSE in the Mediterranean region. And above all, to emphasize our social experimentation on the field. Moving from theory to practice. Working hand in hand with real people through the Demonstrative Actions & Pilot projects, in Portugal, Jordan, Greece, Palestine, Spain & Tunisia. All different, but all co-production initiatives by SSE actors in collaboration with local authorities to deliver better services & integrate vulnerable groups.

Expected Results (EN):

Over 20,000 people covered by improved social services. 6 agreements between public administrations and relevant stakeholders for coordinated planning and implementation of social services. 210 job opportunities created. 12 study visits for social services professionals. 42 policy and regulatory recommendations to improve the delivery of social services.. 13 research studies published on the co-production of social services. 10 pilot SSE projects supported.
