The Earth’s subsurface holds natural resources which are fundamental for regional development. Obtaining accurate images of water, mineral and energy sources deep below the surface is a key step for their management and exploitation. Imaging is a branch of geophysics that allows us to obtain detailed maps, or images, of the Earth’s interior, this is achieved through the analysis of the deformations and electromagnetic fields measured at the surface, similar to tomographic imaging of the interior of the human body. This analysis is carried out by complex algorithms running in high-performance computers. The transborder region between France and Spain hosts five top research institutions working on the three main topics that comprise the field of Subsurface Imaging: Geophysics, Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. The PIXIL project is a multidisciplinary, scientific and technological partnership across the national boundary, that aims to develop beyond-state-of-the-art tools that scrutinize the subsurface, with a special focus on encouraging the use of geothermal energy in the region. The project will contribute to establishing the Pyrenees and neighbouring regions as a major technological hub in subsurface characterization during the next two years, and this achievement expects to boost wealth and employment for the region, related to the extraction and management of natural resources.

El subsuelo alberga recursos naturales de crucial importancia para el desarrollo regional. La obtención de imágenes precisas de las aguas freáticas y de las reservas mineras y energéticas que alberga el subsuelo es fundamental para la explotación y gestión de dichos recursos. El “imaging” es una rama de la geofísica que nos permite obtener mapas detallados, o imágenes, del subsuelo mediante el análisis de las deformaciones o campos eléctricos medidos en la superficie, de forma similar a como se obtienen imágenes tomográficas del interior del cuerpo humano. Dicho análisis se basa en la simulación de señales acústicas, elásticas o electromagnéticas utilizando computadores de altas prestaciones. La zona transfronteriza entre Francia y España alberga cinco centros punteros en las tres disciplinas que conforman el imaging geofísico moderno: Geofísica, Matemática Aplicada y Computación. El proyecto PIXIL es un esfuerzo de colaboración científico-tecnológica transfronterizo y multidisciplinar, con el objetivo de desarrollar las herramientas más punteras para analizar el subsuelo terrestre, con especial interés en favorecer el crecimiento de la energía geotérmica en la región. El proyecto contribuirá a hacer de la zona transpirenaica un referente en tecnología de caracterización del subsuelo en los próximos dos años y su consecución espera servir de impulso a la creación de empleo y riqueza en la zona, relacionados con la generación y gestión de recursos naturales subterráneos.

Le sous-sol terrestre contient des ressources naturelles essentielles au développement d’une région. L’obtention d’images précises des nappes phréatiques, des réserves minières et des sources d’énergie enfouies profondément est fondamental pour l’exploitation et la gestion de ces ressources. C’est grâce à la géophysique, et en particulier à l’imagerie sismique, qu’on peut obtenir de telles cartes. Le principe consiste à exploiter les déformations de la surface et les variations du champ magnétique, de manière similaire à l’imagerie tomographique du corps humain. Cette méthode nécessite des algorithmes complexes exécutés par des clusters de calcul haute-performance. La région transfrontalière entre la France et l’Espagne abrite cinq instituts de recherche de haut-niveau qui travaillent sur les trois principales disciplines nécessaires à l’imagerie du sous-sol : la géophysique, les mathématiques appliquées et l’informatique. Le projet PIXIL est un partenariat scientifique et technologique multidisciplinaire et transfrontalier, qui a pour objectif le développement d’outils de pointe pour l’exploration du sous-sol, en s’attachant tout particulièrement à encourager la croissance de l’énergie géothermique dans la région. Le projet contribuera à établir d’ici deux ans les Pyrénées et ses régions voisines comme un pôle technologique majeur en imagerie sismique. Il génèrera pour la région des richesses et des emplois en lien avec l’extraction et la gestion des ressources naturelles.

Achievements (EN):

After two and a half years of research, the PIXIL project (Pyrenees Imaging eXperience: an InternationaL network) has come to an end, becoming the first cross-border network (Spain-Andorra-France) for subsoil characterisation using geophysical imaging in the field of geothermal energy. Coordinated by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, PIXIL had five other Spanish and French partners that supported the different research areas of the project: Universitat de Barcelona, Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM), Pôle Avenia, INRIA and RealTimeSeismic. "The PIXIL project succeeded in connecting the academic and industrial sectors involved in geothermal energy. During almost three years, we have improved technologies and carried out application demonstrations that would not otherwise have been possible. In addition, through working sessions open to the geothermal community, we have been able to get closer to the problems of this technology, which has a great future in our region. We hope that our work will help to make geothermal energy a complementary technology in the revolution towards clean energy from local sources", said Josep de la Puente, Geoscience Applications Group Manager at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and coordinator of PIXIL. Design of Imaging Algorithms for geothermal reservoir characterisation The PIXIL research in the design of Imaging Algorithm’s area, a new high-order, parallel modeling tool was developed to simulate 3D magnetotelluric (MT) geophysical experiments. Simultaneously, researchers developed deep neural networks (DNNs) aimed at solving the so-called inverse problem, i.e. determining subsurface properties from recorded measurements. These DNNs were also applied to the design of better borehole logging instruments. On the other hand, PIXIL conducted a collaborative research and development with the industrial partner of the project, RealTimeSeismic, in order to build a Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) tool suitable for surface waves and ultimately applying it onto real data acquired by RealTimeSeismic in a near-surface seismic exploration. High Performance Computing (HPC) implementation for the geothermal sector While designing innovative algorithms is fundamental to the effectiveness of imaging technologies, it is their implementation as software that makes the concept applicable. Thus, this area of the project has focused on implementing the methodological advances developed and transforming them into fast, accurate and reliable software. The result of this effort is a new version of PETGEM, a parallel code that focuses on detecting and characterising geothermal reservoirs (and other valuable resources) based on electromagnetic methods and high-performance computing. Thanks to PIXIL's research, PETGEM proves to be a scalable, flexible, accurate and efficient software for solving realistic test cases in both marine and land contexts. In addition, PETGEM has been selected for the first pre-assessment study of the Lab-to-Market (L2M) program of the R+D+I Energy for Society Network (XRE4S), which evaluates the technology itself and the market opportunity. Technology applications in geothermal energy: An essential aspect of the PIXIL project has been to demonstrate the improvement of the technologies developed with real applications and experiments to quantify its results. In the last research area of the project, researchers proved the capacity of the technologies to visualise reservoirs from geophysical data and modeling. Specifically, they investigated a reference model such as the geothermal anomaly of La Garriga, located in the Catalan region of Vallès Oriental, and they reinterpreted it to renew the existing conceptual model. Thus, the new conceptual model integrates geophysical results (obtained from electromagnetic, seismic, gravimetric and temperature data) with geochemical, geological and hydrogeological results. In this way, it has been possible to study in depth the mechanisms that control many of the geothermal systems present in the Pyrenees.
