Description (EN): The current health crisis has exacerbated the shortage of MLTs (medical laboratory technologists) that has already been evident for several years. In the Euregio Maas-Rhine (EMR) there are 8000 MLT professionals (2000 in Belgium, 5000 in Germany and 1000 in the Netherlands). Despite the 1,600 students enrolled in MLT courses in EMR (200 (FL, BE), 300 (FR, BE), 900 in DE and 200 (NL)), 4 out of 5 regions report a severe shortage of professionals. For example, in Germany 41% of hospitals have problems with their ATM framework (DVTA Report 2019, Annex). In Belgium the situation is comparable in all three regions. It is imperative to increase the number of graduates and attract more young people to these studies.
The FUNFORLAB project takes up a second challenge, the need to adapt the technical skills of MLTs to the increasing automation of their trade. The training of medical laboratory technologists is mainly given in Haute Ecole (B, NL) or vocational school (D). These schools are equipped with laboratories for teaching manual medical analysis techniques. However, most analyses are fully automated and the schools are unable to equip themselves with automatons. This problem has also been pointed out by recent quality audits in Belgium (www.aeqes.be). In Germany, the level of training of MLTs was judged to be insufficient compared to European standards (Annex MTA-Dialog).
Finally, there is the problem of a lack of cross-border mobility linked first of all to the variability of the legal frameworks of the member countries. In Germany and Belgium, unlike in the Netherlands, access to the profession is subject to approval by the authorities and a quota of continuing education and training. In addition, there is too much heterogeneity in the training courses, which vary greatly from one region to another. In the Netherlands, there are two general science courses, one at secondary level (MBO) and one at university college level (HBO). As medical biology is only an option, graduates have to specialise in hospital-based courses of widely varying quality. In Germany, training is at secondary school level. Under the impetus of Europe, it envisages the academicisation of the curriculum in order to better work on certain skills related to the implementation of thoughtful decision-making processes linked to patients. In Belgium, the training is done in High School.
Bringing together 6 financial partners and several methodological partners spread throughout the EMR, the Funforlab project has set itself several objectives: 1) to promote scientific professions in general and MLT in particular. 2) to increase the homogeneity of MLT training and to remove the obstacles to euregional mobility. The partners will involve three target groups: secondary school teachers and students (1000) as well as school drop-outs (45) in order to motivate them for the MLT profession; MLT students and teachers (750) in order to involve them in the steps aimed at homogenising and increasing the quality of MLT curricula and thus increase interregional mobility and employability. In order to achieve the objective, a SWOT analysis will be carried out in an euregional meeting to address the different issues and challenges of the EMR region and to co-construct pedagogical scenarios with the MLE teachers and students of the 3 regions in order to homogenise the training of MLEs. In addition, the partners will invite an expert on school drop-outs. The results will also feed into the framework of a learning game that will be designed by the IT partners (FoRS and CECOTEPE) of the consortium. In this "serious game", the player will meet and solve real challenges and problems encountered in medical laboratories.
The prototype of the game will be tested and evaluated by the target audiences during 5 seminars (1 per region) for secondary schools and 5 seminars for MLT schools. Then, the partners will prepare and organise workshops and seminars to disseminate the tools and good practices identified widely to each target audience: WPT3: 20 workshops to raise awareness of the game among secondary school students and 10 workshops to train secondary school science teachers to integrate it into their teaching practices. WPT4: 5 training seminars for MLT students in the autonomous use of the game for their training and 5 co-construction workshops on the integration of the tool in the MLT training curriculum. Throughout the seminars and workshops, the partners create a sustainable Funforlab virtual community with the participants of the workshops maintained by newsletters, exchange forums, etc. Accreditation by the authorities will be prepared with the professional associations from the outset.

En Euregio Meuse Rhin (EMR), il y a 8000 professionnels TLM (2000 en Belgique, 5000 en Allemagne et 1000 au Pays Bas). Malgré les 1600 étudiants engagés dans les cursus de TLM en EMR (200 (FL, BE), 300 (FR, BE), 900 en DE et 200 (NL)), 4 régions sur les 5 déplorent une pénurie sévère de professionnels. A titre d’exemple, en Allemagne, 41 % des hôpitaux rencontrent des problèmes de leur cadre de MTA (Rapport de 2019 de la DVTA, annexe). En Belgique la situation est comparable dans les trois régions. Il faut impérativement augmenter le nombre de diplômés et attirer plus de jeunes vers ces études.
Le projet FUNFORLAB relève un deuxième challenge, le besoin d’adapter les compétences techniques des TLM à l’automatisation croissante de leur métier. La formation des technologues en laboratoire médical se donne principalement en Haute Ecole (B, NL) ou en école professionnelle (D). Ces écoles sont équipées de laboratoires permettant l'enseignement des techniques d'analyses médicales manuelles. Or la plupart des analyses sont intégralement automatisées et les écoles sont dans l’incapacité de s’équiper d’automates. Cette problématique a également été pointée du doigt par de récents audits qualité en Belgique (www.aeqes.be). En Allemagne, la formation des TLMs a été jugée d’un niveau de formation insuffisant comparé aux standards européens (Annexe MTA-Dialog).
Finalement, il y a la problématique d’un manque de mobilité transfrontalière liée tout d’abord à la variabilité des cadre légaux des pays membres. En Allemagne et en Belgique, un agrément délivré par les autorités et un quota de formations continues sont imposés pour l’accès à la profession contrairement aux Pays-Bas. De plus, il faut noter une trop grande hétérogénéité dans les formations variant fortement d’une région à l’autre. Aux Pays-Bas, deux formations en sciences générales une de niveau secondaire (MBO) et une en Haute Ecole (HBO) cohabitent. La biologie médicale n’étant qu’une option, les diplômés doivent se spécialiser par des formations de qualité très variable en hôpital. En Allemagne, la formation est de niveau secondaire. Sous l’impulsion de l’Europe, elle envisage l’académisation du curriculum pour mieux travailler certaines compétences liées à la mise en œuvre de processus décisionnels réfléchis liés aux patients. En Belgique, la formation se fait en Haute Ecole.
Réunissant 6 partenaires financiers et plusieurs partenaires méthodologiques répartis sur l’ensemble de l’EMR, le projet Funforlab s’est fixé plusieurs objectifs : 1) promotionner les métiers scientifiques en général et TLM en particulier. 2) augmenter l’homogénéité des formations TLM et lever les freins à la mobilité eurégionale. Les partenaires impliqueront trois publics cibles : les enseignants et étudiants des écoles secondaires (1000) ainsi que des jeunes en décrochage scolaire (45) afin de les motiver pour le métier de TLM ; les étudiants et les enseignants TLM (750) afin à les impliquer aux démarches visant l’homogénéisation et l’augmentation de la qualité des cursus TLM et ainsi augmenter la mobilité et l’employabilité interrégionale. Pour atteindre l’objectif, une analyse SWOT sera réalisée en meeting eurégional permettant d’afiner les différentes problématiques et défis de la région EMR de coconstruire des scénari pédaogiques avec les enseignants et étudiants TLM des 3 régions afin d’homogénéiser la formation des TLMs. De plus, les partenaires inviteront un expert des jeunes en décrochage scolaire. Les résultats alimenteront aussi le canevas d’un jeu d’apprentissage qui sera conçu par les partenaires IT (FoRS et CECOTEPE) du consortium. Dans ce « serious game », le joueur rencontrera et devra résoudre des défis et problèmes réellement rencontrés dans les laboratoires médicaux.
Le prototype du jeu sera testé et évalué par les publics cibles lors de 5 séminaires (1 par région) pour les écoles secondaires et 5 séminaires pour les écoles TLM. Ensuite, les partenaires préparent et organisent des ateliers et séminaires permettant de diffuser les outils et bonnes pratiques identifiés largement auprès de chaque public cible : WPT3 : 20 ateliers de sensibilisation des étudiants du secondaire au jeu et 10 ateliers formation des enseignants de sciences du secondaire à son intégration dans leurs pratiques d’enseignements. WPT4 : 5 séminaires de formation des étudiants TLM à l’utilisation autonome du jeu pour leur formation et 5 ateliers de co-construction portant sur l’intégration de l’outil dans le cursus de formation des TLM. Au fil des séminaires et ateliers, les partenaires créent une communauté virtuelle Funforlab durable avec les participants des workshops entretenus par les newsletters, des forums d’échanges, etc. L’accréditation par les autorités sera dès l’entrée préparée avec les associations professionnelles.
Read more Description (DE): Die aktuelle Gesundheitskrise verschärft den bereits seit mehreren Jahren dokumentierten Mangel an MTAs (Medizinisch-technischen Assistenten). In der Euregio Maas-Rhein (EMR) gibt es 8000 MLT-Fachkräfte (2000 in Belgien, 5000 in Deutschland und 1000 in den Niederlanden). Trotz der 1.600 Studenten, die in den MTA-Kursen der EMR eingeschrieben sind (200 (FL, BE), 300 (FR, BE), 900 in DE und 200 (NL)), beklagen 4/5 Regionen einen gravierenden Mangel an Fachkräften. So haben in Deutschland 41% der Krankenhäuser Probleme ihre Posten zu besetzen (DVTA-Bericht 2019, Anhang). In Belgien ist die Situation in den drei Regionen vergleichbar. Um die Zahl der Absolventen zu erhöhen müssen mehr junge Menschen für die MTA-Ausbildung gewonnen werden.
Dieses Projekt stellt sich einer zweiten Herausforderung: der Notwendigkeit, die technischen Fähigkeiten der MTAs an die zunehmende Automatisierung ihres Berufs anzupassen. Die MTA-Schulen sind mit Labors für den Unterricht in manuellen medizinischen Analysetechniken ausgestattet. In den Labors sind die meisten Analysen jedoch voll automatisiert, und die Schulen sind nicht in der Lage, sich mit Automaten auszustatten. Auf dieses Problem haben auch die jüngsten Qualitätsaudits in Belgien hingewiesen (www.aeqes.be). In Deutschland ist die Ausbildung im Hinblick auf zu europäischen Standards als unzureichend eingestuft worden (Anhang MTA-Dialog).
Schließlich gibt es das Problem der mangelnden grenzüberschreitenden Mobilität, das in erster Linie mit unterschiedlichen rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen der Mitgliedsländer zusammenhängt. In Deutschland und Belgien ist im Gegensatz zu den Niederlanden der Zugang zum Beruf von einer behördlichen Genehmigung und einer Weiterbildungsquote abhängig. Hinzu kommt eine zu große Heterogenität bei den Ausbildungskursen von Region zu Region. In den Niederlanden gibt es zwei allgemeinwissenschaftliche Studiengänge, einen auf Sekundarschulniveau (MBO) und einen auf Fachhochschulniveau (HBO). Da die medizinische Biologie nur eine Option ist, müssen sich die Absolventen dann durch eine Krankenhausausbildung von sehr unterschiedlicher Qualität spezialisieren. In Deutschland erfolgt die Ausbildung auf Sekundarschulniveau. Unter dem Anstoß Europas planen sie die Akademisierung der Ausbildung, um bestimmte Fähigkeiten im Zusammenhang mit Entscheidungsprozessen im Zusammenhang mit Patienten besser zu erarbeiten. In Belgien wird die Ausbildung an einer Fachhochschule durchgeführt.
Das Projekt vereinigt 6 Finanzpartner und mehrere methodologische Partner aus der ganzen EMR. Es verfolgt mehrere Ziele: 1) die Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Berufe im Allgemeinen und des MTA-Berufs im Besonderen. 2) die Erhöhung der Homogenität der MTA-Ausbildung und das Ausräumen von Hindernissen in Bezuf auf die euregionale Mobilität. Die Partner werden dabei drei Zielgruppen einbeziehen: Lehrer und Schüler der Sekundarstufe (1000) und Schulabbrecher (45), um sie für den Beruf des TLM zu motivieren; TLM-Schüler und -Lehrer (750), um sie in die Fortschritte zur Homogenisierung und Qualitätssteigerung der MTA-Lehrpläne mit einzubeziehen und so die interregionale Mobilität und Beschäftigungsfähigkeit zu erhöhen. Um diese Ziele zu erreichen, wird in einem euregionalen Treffen eine SWOT-Analyse durchgeführt, in der die verschiedenen Herausforderungen der EMR-Region präzisiert und pädagogische Szenarien zur Homogenisierung und Aufbesserung der Ausbildung mit den MTA-Lehrern und -Studenten aus der EMR ausgearbeitet werden. Darüber hinaus werden die Partner einen Experten für Schulabbrecher einladen. Die Ergebnisse werden auch in ein Lernspiel einfließen, das von den IT-Partnern (FoRS und CECOTEPE) des Konsortiums entworfen und ausgearbeitet wird. In diesem "Serious Game" trifft der Spieler auf echte Herausforderungen und Probleme, die in medizinischen Labors auftreten und löst sie.
Der entwickelte Prototyp wird von den Zielgruppen in 5 Seminaren (1 /Region) für Sekundarschulen und 4 Seminaren für TLM-Schulen (Außer in Ostbelgien, keine MTA-Schule) getestet und bewertet. Dann bereiten die Partner Workshops und Seminare vor, um das entwickelte Tool und die bewährten Praktiken bei allen Zielpublikums weiterzuverbreiten: WPT3: 20 Workshops zur Sensibilisierung von Sekundarschülern für das Spiel und 10 Workshops zur Ausbildung von Lehrern für Naturwissenschaften an Sekundarschule (Integration in ihre Unterrichtspraxis). WPT4: 4 Trainingsseminare für MTA-Studenten zur autonomen Nutzung des Spiels für ihre Ausbildung und 4 Co-Konstruktions-Workshops zur Integration des Tools in den MTA-Ausbildungslehrplan. Im Laufe der Seminare und Workshops schaffen die Partner eine nachhaltige virtuelle Funforlab-Gemeinschaft mit den Teilnehmern der Workshops, die durch Newsletter, Austauschforen usw. dauerhaft unterhalten werden wird. Die verschiedenen Workshops und Seminare können bei Bedarf mit Hilfe von Plattformen wie Teams oder Zoom auch aus der Ferne abgehalten werden.

Expected Results (EN): RI6 Share of early school-leavers
Expected Outputs (EN): The purpose of this project is to develop an initiation and teaching tool for students in science. Indeed, as these courses are currently in general shortage in the EMR, the promotion of science and the MLT-profession to students since secondary education via the FUNFORLAB game will make it possible to motivate them to enrol in scientific orientations and, later, in the MLT course.
Therefore, in a social context, this project will contribute to the rescue of a population of students with orientation difficulties. It is very difficult for secondary school students to choose a career for their future. Indeed, during their research, some students are disoriented and have no idea of a concrete profession. These students could drop out, lose interest in studying and leave school without any qualifying training. The FUNFORLAB project, through the fun and intuitive tool developed as part of the project, will enable them to discover the MLT profession. Indeed, they will be subjected to challenges representing the daily life of the MLTs, which allows them to discover the job in a concrete way. This would make it possible to encourage more people to choose this profession or another scientific field on the basis of a representation close to reality.
Within the framework of higher education, the first year of study of MLT is a pivotal year resulting in a relatively high failure and dropout rate, regardless of the sector, network or country. A certain percentage of these failures can be attributed to a misorientation in students' choice of studies upon graduation from high school. In addition, there is also a real lack of involvement and interest on the part of students throughout their studies. By exposing the daily reality and challenges of the MLT profession, the development of the "Serious Game" project will make it possible to overcome these two problems that can be at the origin of these failures and/or abandonments. Indeed, from the beginning of the studies and even before, the game will introduce students to the TLM profession and especially to experiment virtually the different tasks of the profession for which they are destined. This step will be an early first contact with the profession before the clinical internships. This will allow beginner students to question themselves early on about the choice of their study and to eventually reorient themselves.

En effet, ces filières étant actuellement globalement en pénurie dans l'EMR, la promotion de la profession auprès des étudiants dès le secondaire via le jeu FUNFORLAB permettra de susciter très jeune leur intérêt pour les sciences et une inscription dans la filière TLM.
De ce fait, dans un contexte social, ce projet contribuera au sauvetage d’une population d’étudiants ayant des difficultés d'orientation. Il est très difficile pour des étudiants du secondaire de choisir une orientation pour leur avenir. En effet, lors de leur recherche, certains étudiants sont désorientés et n’ont aucune idée de profession concrète. Ces étudiants pourraient abandonner, se désintéresser des études et quitter l'école sans formation qualifiante. Le projet FUNFORLAB, à travers l’outil ludique et intuitif développé dans le cadre du projet, permettra de leur faire découvrir la profession de TLM. En effet, ils seront soumis à des défis représentant le quotidien des TLM ce qui leur permet de découvrir concrètement le métier. Cela permettrait d’amener un plus grand nombre à choisir cette profession ou une autre filière scientifique sur base d’une représentation proche de la réalité.
Dans le cadre des études supérieures, la première année d’étude de TLM est une année charnière se soldant par un taux d’échec et d’abandon relativement élevé et ce toute filière, tout réseau et tout pays confondus. Un certain pourcentage de ces échecs peut être attribué à une mauvaise orientation dans le choix des études des étudiants dès leur sortie du secondaire. Par ailleurs, il existe également un réel manque d’implication et d’intérêt des étudiants tout au long de leur cursus. En faisant découvrir la réalité quotidienne et les challenges de la profession de TLM, le développement du projet « Serious Game » permettra de pallier à ces deux problèmes qui peuvent être à l’origine de ces échecs et/ou abandons. En effet, dès le début des études et même en amont, le jeu permettra d’initier les étudiants à la profession de TLM et surtout d’expérimenter virtuellement les différentes tâches du métier auquel ils se destinent. Cette étape constituera un premier contact anticipé avec le métier avant les stages cliniques. Cela permettra aux étudiants débutants de se questionner précocement sur le choix de leurs études et de se réorienter éventuellement.
Read more Expected Outputs (DE): Ziel dieses Projekts ist es, ein Initiations- und Lehrspiel für Studenten in naturwissenschaftlichen Fächern sowie für MTA-Studenten zu entwickeln. Diese Studienrichtungen sind derzeit in der EMR generell nicht sehr beliebt. Das Entdecken des Berufes durch das Spiel FUNFORLAB für Schülerinnen und Schüler in der Sekundarstufe wird dazu beitragen, sie zu motivieren, sich wissenschaftlich zu orientieren.
Daher wird dieses Projekt im sozialen Kontext einer Gruppe von Schülern mit Orientierungsproblemen konkret helfen. Es ist für Sekundarschüler sehr schwierig, eine Orientierung für ihre Zukunft zu wählen. Tatsächlich sind einige Studenten während ihrer Suche desorientiert und haben keine Ahnung welchen Beruf sie konkret wählen könnten. Diese Schüler könnten aussteigen, das Interesse am Studium verlieren und die Schule ohne eine qualifizierte Ausbildung verlassen. Das FUNFORLAB-Projekt wird ihnen durch das im Rahmen des Projekts entwickelte, unterhaltsame und intuitive Tool helfen den MTA-Beruf zu entdecken. Tatsächlich werden sie Herausforderungen ausgesetzt sein, die das tägliche Leben der MTAs repräsentieren, so dass sie den Job auf konkrete Weise entdecken können. Dies würde es ermöglichen, mehr Interessenten zu ermutigen, diesen oder einen anderen wissenschaftlichen Beruf auf der Grundlage einer realitätsnahen Darstellung zu wählen.
Im Rahmen der Hochschulbildung ist das erste Studienjahr des MTAs ein entscheidendes Jahr, das generell eine relativ hohe Ausfallquote aufweist, unabhängig von der betroffenen Branche, Schule und des Landes. Ein gewisser Prozentsatz dieser Misserfolge ist auf eine Fehlausrichtung bei der Studienwahl nach dem Abitur zurückzuführen. Darüber hinaus fehlt es den Studenten während des Studiums oft an Engagement und Interesse. Das im Rahmen dieses Projektes entwickelte "Serious Game" zeigt die tägliche Realität und die Herausforderungen des MTA-Berufs und wird es so ermöglichen, diese beiden Probleme, welche die Ursache für diese häufigen Misserfolge und/oder Ausbildungsabbrüche sein können, zu überwinden. Tatsächlich kann das Spiel den Schülern vor und während des Studiums, den MTA-Beruf virtuell näherbringen, indem sie die verschiedenen Aufgaben des Berufes spielerisch erproben. Dieser Schritt wird ein früher erster Kontakt mit dem Beruf vor den klinischen Praktika sein. So können sich Anfänger frühzeitig über die Wahl ihres Studiums informieren und sich, wenn nötig, neu orientieren.
