RESTART MED! is aimed at revitalizing the tourism economy after the COVID-19 pandemic, by building on and learning from previous experiences and practices, using this moment to boost sustainability together with the economic recovery of this key industry. The project will support tourism providers to work alongside public and civil society stakeholders for a better and resilient recovery, by creating more sustainable policies and products. A positive change is expected through a reset of basic tourism principles where the diversified, sustainable offer and common branding will reattract tourists. This will be achieved thanks to the exploitation and dissemination of best practices and results of at least 8 sustainable tourism projects, and the via the reinforcement and extension of stakeholder networks of at least 5 capitalizable projects with a common brand and platform. Finally, the project will raise awareness among public authorities and policy-makers, promoting sustainable tourism good practices among them, and supporting mainstreaming into policies.

Achievements (EN):

Launched in September 2021 and officially closing in September 2023, RESTART MED! – REvitalization of Sustainable Tourism Across Regions in The MEDiterranean – a project co-financed by the European Union through the ENI CBC MED Programme, has come to its conclusion. These past two years have been marked by both challenges and enriching experiences, from which we have all gained significant technical and personal insights. The community that has followed our journey through news, social media, and the numerous online and offline events we have organized is already familiar with all the successful stories and accomplishments that make us proud. To retrace the whole path, our project’s story, anyone can simply take a look at the different sections of this page, from news to events, from videos to documents; and also browse our Instagram and Twitter accounts. With this last piece of news, we want to wave goodbye to all our readers and take the occasion to thank CISP, the International Committee for the Development of Peoples, the project lead, and all partners – the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, the Catalan Tourism Board, the American University of Beirut, the Jordan University of Science and Technology, and WWF Mediterranean North Africa. Our partnership has been more than a mere collaboration; it has been an extraordinary bond that has etched an indelible mark. We also extend heartfelt appreciation to the four ENI CBC MED funded standard project members – CROSSDEV, Med Pearls, MED GAIMS, and MEDUSA projects – for their support in implementing RESTART MED! activities, in addition to the numerous Mediterranean initiatives that joined forces with us. We also must mention all local organisations, authorities, institutions, and communities that – from Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisa and Spain – enriched our mission with their creativity, guidance, and unwavering commitment. Last but not least, we are grateful to the European Union, the ENI CBC MED Programme and the JTS Team for believing in our vision and enabling us to scale towering peaks of achievement. Yes, the curtains draw to a close on the RESTART MED! project, yet its legacy thrives, and its model, ideas, and outcomes will keep paving the way towards a better future for territories and their communities across the Mediterranean and beyond. During these past two years, we've had the privilege of meeting and establishing connections with exceptional professionals whom we are confident will carry forward the spirit of RESTART MED! in the years to come. RESTART MED! legacy will continue as well via the MED Sustainable tourism platform and the MED Sustainable tourism LinkedIn group. Expected Results (EN):

20 subgrants for visibility of tourism products. 7 awareness raising initiatives to build sustainable communities. 50 enterprises and local community entities benefiting from trainings on sustainability and promotion. An online sustainable tourism community platform enabled. At least 20 new jobs created within the beneficiary MSMEs and project partners.

Expected Outputs (EN):

3.1 - Training of tourism service providers on Sustainability and Promotion. 3.2 - Product competition (subgrants for visibility initiatives). 4.1 - Network strategy for sustainable tourism community. 4.2 - Online sustainable tourism community platform. 4.3 - Community-building initiatives for reinforcing/enlarging sustainable tourism stakeholder networks. 5.1 - Awareness increase of policy makers/ public authorities on sustainable tourism challenges. 5.2 - Policy reviews for the mainstreaming of sustainability in tourism.
