For at nå i mål med den grønne omstilling skal biomassens rolle og funktion udfoldes mere end tilfældet er i dag. Alle typer biomasse skal ses som værdifulde råstoffer og det skal læres at udnytte dem bedst muligt med omtanke for både miljø og klima og i forhold til energisystemets funktion, hvor biogas er et aktiv i balancering af systemet. Kampen om biomassen forstærkes i fremtiden. Der er derfor ikke råd til, at biomassen ligger og rådner i vejkanter og på strande eller bliver deponeret eller afbrændt. I stedet skal biomassen anvendes til både vedvarende energiproduktion og til produktion af højværdiprodukter. Således bidrager biomassen både til omstilling af energisektoren, og til andre sektorer som er afhængige af fossile råstoffer eller meget energitunge processer, f.eks. olie til plast, flybrændstof og stenuld til isolering. Power Bio har det overordnede formål at øge udbuddet af biomasse til grøn energiproduktion og højværdiprodukter gennem effektive anvendelser af uudnyttet restbiomasse samt halm. Biomassen anvendes i kaskader altså en trinvis udnyttelse af biomassen. Herved løftes biomasserne til så høj en værdi som mulig og værdikæden forlænges. Dette kan gøre indsamlingen meningsfuld og rentabel for både kommuner og biomasseaftager, hvilket ikke er tilfældet i dag. Projektet viser vejen til best practice for at udnytte hver enkelt biomasse optimalt og til flere formål; energi, højværdiprodukter og CO2-lagring. Gennem samarbejde på tværs af kommuner, virksomheder og praksisnær forskning vil projektet understøtte implementering af konkrete indsatser indenfor indsamling og anvendelse. Projektets mange kommunale partnere giver et unikt grundlag for at kunne opnå større mængder biomasse til energiformål og højværdiformål. Dette kræver dialog mellem indsamlingsaktører, biomasseejere og virksomheder, så biomassen rent faktisk kan blive, og bliver, anvendt. Der bygges på erfaringer fra Interreg-projektet Greater Bio, hvor det blandt andet blev klargjort, at skalering og vidensdeling er afgørende for at restbiomasse kan få en relevans i den grønne omstilling. Netop derfor er det grænseregionale fokus i projektet afgørende for at kunne opbygge de nødvendige mængder og kompetencer, hvilket på sigt kan føre til en egentlig biomasseklynge til gavn for erhvervsudviklingen i regionen. Fokus er på skabelse af konkrete løsninger, hvilket har bevirket en stor partnertilslutning, og muliggør den nødvendige skalering i en grad, som ikke er set før i Danmark og Sverige. Det fjerner en barriere og muliggør konkrete løsninger til at overkomme barrierer for anvendelse fx ved at rense affald fra vejgræs og sand fra strandopskyl, så anvendelse til biogas muliggøres. Biogas og pyrolyse spiller en central rolle i den grønne omstilling, da det er anvendelsestyper, der kan levere store voluminer og ikke kræver samme kvalitet som mange højværdianvendelser. De gode løsninger kræver et samspil mellem kommuner og virksomheder. Derfor arbejdes med markedsinnovation i en tværgående arbejdspakke, hvor kommuner i samspil med potentielle biomasseaftagere kan præcisere behov, og hvor virksomheder kan komme med løsninger inden for både indsamlingsteknologier og anvendelse af restbiomasse til energiløsninger og nye produkter. En række vidensinstitutioner vil støtte virksomhederne og give adgang til data, testfaciliteter og materiale. En af nøglerne til vurdering og prioritering af anvendelse af restbiomasse, er videreudvikling og udrulning af et biomassevurderingsværktøj fra Greater Bio projektet. Værktøjet kortlægger biomassepotentialer ift. mængder, kvalitet og klimaaftryk ved forskellig anvendelse, samt vægter biogaspotentiale kontra højværdiprodukt-potentiale til gavn for morgendagens biobaserede løsninger. Helt kort; Power Bio skaber volumen i den grønne omstilling gennem grænseregionalt, geografisk bredt samarbejde med fokus på græs, tang og halm til gavn for forsyningssikkerhed, miljø og økonomi.

In order to achieve the goal of the green transition, the role and function of biomass must be more developed than is currently the case. All types of biomass must be seen as valuable raw materials and it must be learned to make the best use of them with care for both the environment and climate and in relation to the functioning of the energy system, where biogas is an asset in balancing the system. The battle for biomass will intensify in the future. Therefore, the biomass cannot afford to rot on roadsides and beaches or to be deposited or burned. Instead, the biomass must be used for both renewable energy production and for the production of high-value products. Thus, biomass contributes both to the transformation of the energy sector and to other sectors that rely on fossil raw materials or very energy-intensive processes, such as oil for plastics, aviation fuel and stone wool for insulation. Power Bio aims to increase the supply of biomass for green energy production and high-value products through efficient uses of unused residual biomass and straw. The biomass is used in cascades, i.e. a stepwise utilization of the biomass. This raises the biomass to as high a value as possible and extends the value chain. This can make the collection meaningful and profitable for both municipalities and biomass purchasers, which is not the case today. The project shows the way to best practice in order to make optimal and multi-purpose use of each biomass; energy, high-value products and CO2 storage. Through collaboration across municipalities, companies and practice-oriented research, the project will support the implementation of specific initiatives within collection and application. The project's many municipal partners provide a unique basis for obtaining larger amounts of biomass for energy and high-value purposes. This requires dialogue between collection actors, biomass owners and companies so that the biomass can actually be, and is, used. The project builds on experience from the Interreg project Greater Bio, where it was made clear that scaling and knowledge sharing are crucial for residual biomass to have a relevance in the green transition. Precisely for this reason, the cross-border regional focus of the project is crucial in order to build up the necessary volumes and skills, which in the long term can lead to a proper biomass cluster for the benefit of business development in the region. The focus is on the creation of concrete solutions, which has resulted in a large partner connection, and enables the necessary scaling to a degree that has not been seen before in Denmark and Sweden. It removes a barrier and enables concrete solutions to overcome barriers to use, e.g. by cleaning waste from roadgrass and sand from beach rinsing, enabling use for biogas. Biogas and pyrolysis play a key role in the green transition, as they are applications that can deliver large volumes and do not require the same quality as many high-value applications. The good solutions require an interaction between municipalities and companies. This is why we are working with market innovation in a cross-cutting work package, where municipalities in interaction with potential biomass buyers can clarify needs, and where companies can come up with solutions within both collection technologies and the use of residual biomass for energy solutions and new products. A number of knowledge institutions will support businesses and provide access to data, testing facilities and material. One of the keys to assessing and prioritising the use of residual biomass is the further development and roll-out of a biomass assessment tool from the Greater Bio project. The tool maps biomass potentials in terms of quantities, quality and climate footprint in different applications, and weighs biogas potential versus high-value product potential for the benefit of tomorrow's bio-based solutions. Very briefly; Power Bio creates volume in the green transition through cross-border, geographically broad cooperation focusing on grass, seaweed and straw for the benefit of security of supply, the environment and the economy.

Actual Achievements (DA):

Projektets aktiviteter dækker mange partnere, samarbejder og faglige områder. Ved udgangen af P5 er aktivitetsniveauet meget højt, og mange cases og resultater færdiggøres. Det gør det vanskeligt at pege på de absolut vigtigste samlede resultater i perioden. Her præsenteres derfor tre udvalgte aktiviteter/resultater, med forbehold for at flere væsentlige fremgår af rapportens øvrige afsnit. Et af periodens væsentlige resultater er, at projektpartner DTU har udarbejdet og fået publiceret litteraturgennemgangen From ocean to meadow: A circular bioeconomy by transforming seaweed, seagrass, grass, and straw waste into high-value products i det internationale tidsskrift Waste Management (marts 2025). Artiklen kortlægger, hvordan fire forskellige biomasse tang, ålegræs, græs og halm kan omdannes fra affaldsstrømme til højværdiprodukter i en cirkulær bioøkonomi. Resultaterne giver kommuner et grundlag for at prioritere biomasseindsamling, virksomheder og iværksættere et overblik over nye forretningsmuligheder i bl.a. fødevare-, kosmetik-, kemi- og byggesektoren, samt forsknings- og uddannelsesinstitutioner indsigt i behov for teknologisk udvikling. Publikationen placerer samtidig Power Bio på det videnskabelige landkort og styrker projektets legitimitet internationalt. Lanceringen af Kystnetværket Strandopskyl og kystressourcer i DK og SE er et andet væsentligt resultat fra perioden. Lanceringen blev afholdt på BLOX i KBH i juni, med fokus på potentialet i indsamling af tang og ålegræs i vand et potentiale der kun i lille grad er afsøgt i projektet. Netværket har nu med 67 interne og eksterne medlemmer, og er etableret som et blivende fællesskab, hvor kommuner, virksomheder, forskere og organisationer samskaber løsninger for cirkulær anvendelse af strandopskyl på tværs af sektorer. Dette bekræfter det tydelige behov øget videndeling og en udvidet aktørkreds, med grundlag for nye værdikæder. Netværket har i P5 taget endnu et afgørende skridt for at skabe klare rammer for kommunernes håndtering af strandopskyl. Gennem ekstern juridisk bistand er der udarbejdet en samlet redegørelse for de gældende regler ved indsamling, opbevaring og videreanvendelse af strandopskyl, herunder vurderinger af affaldsstatus, VVM, habitatregler og muligheder for udnyttelse til landbrugsjord, kystbeskyttelse, kompost og byggematerialer. Juristerne har dertil lavet udkast til henvendelse til relevante myndigheder med anmodning om stillingtagen til uafklarede centrale spørgsmål, som partnerne førhen ikke er lykkedes med at få klare svar på. Dette var omdrejningspunktet for netværkets 2. temadag, afholdt d. 25.08 med stor tilslutning. De foreløbige resultater viser at lovgivning i høj grad begrænser kommunernes handlemuligheder, når strandopskyl skal tænkes ind i udvikling og innovation. Da materialet klassificeres som affald og ikke er særskilt reguleret, underlægges det stramme regler for indsamling, opbevaring og anvendelse, hvilket både kan bremse visse forsøg og vanskeliggøre en bred skalering. Derfor vil problemstillingen blive adresseret som politiske anbefalinger i de grænseregionale handlingsplaner samt tages videre i juristernes myndighedsdialog. Projektets styregruppe inddrages mhp. hvordan disse pointer bedst bringes frem til væsentlige beslutningslag. Vallensbæk Kommune har i samarbejde med partnerne, RUC og Ringsted Biogas samt eksterne aktører, igangsat et banebrydende kaskadeforsøg med tagrør, som kombinerer naturpleje, lokal værdiskabelse og klimafordele. Forsøget bygger på en mosaikplan (510 ha), hvor tagrør opdeles til tre formål: stråtage, biogas og naturbeskyttelse. De længste tagrør aftages af en lokal tagdækker som alternativ til importerede rør fra Asien, mens øvrig biomasse neddeles og testes på Biocerc Ringsted Biogas for at dokumentere gasudbytte og forbehandlingsmetoder. Denne tværfaglige og skalerbare kaskademodel for udnyttelse af tagrør, kombinerer både klima, energi og naturpleje i ét samlet koncept.

Actual Achievements (EN):

During this period, the project has achieved a number of significant results, where collaboration across sectors and borders has strengthened the implementation of biomass-based solutions. Among the most important findings is the conclusion of nine professional notes on seaweed and eelgrass, which form the basis for an overall evaluation of possible uses. These notes have analysed, among other things, the composition of the biomass, the collection efficiency and the potential use in biogas production and composting. In addition, experiments with artificial drying of collected eelgrass in drums during the winter months have shown promising results for a better use of eelgrass in the region in the future, which in the past has been limited to the summer months. A significant step forward in this period has been the improvement of grass collection for biogas. In the past, grass was mainly supplied in loose form, resulting in inefficient transports and loss of biomass during handling. Now we have succeeded in optimising logistics by compacting grass in straw bales, which doubles the amount transported per truck and reduces costs. Ringsted Biogas has conducted experiments with four municipalities on this method, where the preliminary results show a significant improvement in the efficiency of biogas production. The final analyses will be presented in 2025. Vallensbæk Municipality has established itself as a frontrunner in Denmark within the use of biochar in urban environments. During the period, the municipality has established 24 test beds with varying content of biochar and admixture materials to investigate the effects on CO2 storage, soil structure and plant growth. Here they will test whether biochar can improve water retention and reduce the need for irrigation, which is of great relevance for climate adaptation in urban environments. The tests are still ongoing and work is ongoing on a comparable analysis that can validate these observations and support a potential upscaling of biochar use in several Danish municipalities. The experiment was described in many Danish and international trade journals, and the continued interest is great. During the period, Roskilde University has continued analyses of seven biogas plants in Region Zealand, where detailed reports have been prepared on the plants' potential for using different biomass. Collaborations with actors such as Green2X, Nature Energy Biogas A/S and Bigadan have contributed to a deeper understanding of which biomass has the greatest potential for optimised biogas production. Preliminary conclusions suggest that a combination of grass, manure and organic industrial waste can improve gas yields and ensure a more stable production process. The final analyses will be included in the final recommendations of the project. During this period, DTU has developed several scientific articles analysing the use of biomass in sustainable building materials. The articles focus on system solutions where biomass such as eelgrass and straw are used in acoustic panels and insulation materials. The studies document that these materials not only have a low climate footprint compared to conventional building materials, but can also contribute to improved indoor climate and sound insulation. This research is part of a broader effort to promote bio-based alternatives in the construction industry, but further testing and practical implementations are needed to verify the durability of large-scale production. At the policy level, the work on innovative tenders has continued, and a concrete example is Rudersdal Municipality's decision to weight 30% on environmental criteria in tenders for mowing and biomass collection. Based on the results of studies and analyses, the project continues to refine the solutions in future periods, with a particular focus on large-scale implementation and optimisation of border regional cooperation.
