Description (DE):

Das Projekt befasst sich mit der verschwenderischen und schädlichen Verwendung toxischer Klebstoffe bei der Herstellung von Ingenieurholzprodukten (EWPs) in der Bauindustrie. Um neue Technologien für klebstofffreie EWPs aufzuzeigen und deren Einführung in den Markt Nordwesteuropas (NWE) zu fördern, werden Universitäten, Industrie und der öffentliche Sektor zusammenarbeiten. Die Vertrauensbildung hinsichtlich der strukturellen Eigenschaften von klebstofffreien EWPs auf Basis von verdichtetem Holz ist der Schlüssel für den Marktzugang. Das Projekt wird den Technologie-Reifegrad von 4 auf 7 anheben. Mehr als 5 Mio. m³ an EWP wurden in der EU in 2013/14 produziert. Der Markt wächst, da EWPs als eine „grüne“ Alternative zu Stahl und Beton im Bausektor gelten. Auf lange Sicht soll durch das Projekt eine Produktion von 1 Mio. m³ klebstofffreier EWPs entstehen, die 6000 t toxischer Klebstoffe vermeidet. Die klebstofffreien EWPs werden zu 100 % wiederverwendbar und recyclefähig sein. Dies wird NWE positiv beeinflussen, wo der Hauptanteil der EWPs letztlich auf Abfalldeponien oder in der Abfallverbrennung endet und zu den 15 Mio. t an Holzabfall der Bauindustrie in Europa jedes Jahr beiträgt. Auf lange Sicht soll durch das Projekt der Anteil der EWPs an der Abfalldeponierung um 0.5 Mio. t am Ende der Lebensspanne reduziert werden. Das Projekt wird 10 NWE Unternehmen unterstützen um neue Technologien aufzugreifen und eine Reihe von klebstofffreien EWPs zu produzieren. Die wird zu weiterem Nutzen durch Wettbewerbsvorteile, Wirtschaftswachstum und nachhaltige Beschäftigung führen. Die neue Technologie wird durch Steigerung der Wertschöpfung von regional verfügbarem Holz niedriger Qualität auch zur nachhaltigen Forstwirtschaft in NWE und damit verbunden zur Verbesserung des ländlichen Lebensunterhalts beitragen. Nach Ende des Projekts wird das Langzeiteffekte-Arbeitspaket diese positiven Effekte durch Fürsprache- und Geschäftsunterstützungs-Maßnahmen erhalten.

Le projet répond à la problématique de l’utilisation nocive et génératrice de déchets de colles toxiques pour la fabrication de produits en bois d’ingénierie (PBI) dans le secteur du bâtiment. Les universités, le secteur économique et le secteur public s’associeront afin de développer et démontrer la viabilité de nouveaux produits sans colle (en utilisant des tourillons en bois densifié), tout en encourageant et en accompagnant leur mise sur le marché en Europe du Nord-Ouest (N-O). Il vise à améliorer le niveau de maturité technologique, passant de 4 à 7. Plus de 5 millions de m3 de PBI ont été produit dans l’UE en 2013/14. Ce marché est en pleine croissance. Le projet propose une alternative écologique à l’utilisation d’acier et de béton dans le secteur de la construction. Sur le long terme, il permettra la production d’1 mio. de m3 d’éléments sans colle réduisant ainsi de 6000 tonnes l’utilisation de colles toxiques.Les PBI sans colle seront 100 % recyclables et réutilisables. Cette démarche aura un impact positif en Europe du Nord où la majorité des PBI sont, en fin de vie, ensevelis ou incinérés et contribuent aux 15 mio. de tonnes de déchets issus de constructions en bois générés chaque année à travers toute l’Europe. Sur le long terme, le projet vise à réduire ces déchets de 0,5 mio. de tonnes. Le projet accompagnera 10 entreprises du N-O de l’Europe pour la mise en place de cette nouvelle technique et la production de PBI de haut-de-gamme sans colle. D’autres avantages tels qu’une croissance économique, des avantages comparatifs et la création d’emplois durables sont également escomptés. De plus, cette nouvelle technique contribuera à la gestion durable des forêts et améliorera les revenus des populations rurales locales en apportant de la valeur ajoutée aux bois de moindre qualité. L´organisation et l´appui économique dévelopés dans le workpackage "effets sur le long terme" garantiront des effets positifs et durables après la cloture du projet.

Description (EN):

The project addresses the wasteful and harmful use of toxic adhesives in the manufacturing of Engineered Wood Products (EWPs) by the construction industry. University, industry and the public sector will cooperate to demonstrate new adhesive free EWPs using new technology, encouraging and enabling market uptake across North West Europe (NWE). Providing confidence in the structural properties of adhesive free EWPs using compressed wood is the key to this market uptake. The project will move the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) from 4 to 7. More than 5 million m3 of EWPs were produced in the EU in 2013/14 and the market is growing, as EWPs provide a ‘green’ alternative to steel and concrete in construction. In the long-term, the project aims to result in the production of 1 million m3 of adhesive free products and remove 6000 tonnes of the toxic adhesives currently used in manufacturing. The adhesive free products will be 100% reusable and recyclable. This will have a positive impact in North West Europe where the majority of EWPs go to landfill or incineration contributing to the 15 million tonnes of timber construction waste in landfill across Europe each year. In the long term, the project aims to result in the reduction of EWPs to landfill by 0.5 million tonnes at end of life. The project will support ten NWE businesses to adopt the new technology and produce a range of adhesive free EWPs. This will have additional benefits leading to competitive advantage, economic growth and sustainable jobs. The new technology will also contribute to the sustainable management of forests in NWE and connected rural livelihoods by adding value to locally available low-quality timber. The advocacy, influencing and business support activity undertaken in the Long Term Effects work package will sustain these positive impacts after the project has ended.

Expected Outputs (EN):

Production 520,000 m3 Cross Laminated Timber in 2014; Production 3.5 million m3 of glulam in 2013; 1m3 of glulam = 6kg of adhesive; Currently 0m3 of adhesive free EWPs using compressed wood dowel are produced globally. Timber construction waste to landfill=15 million tonnes per year in EU. Timber construction waste recycled (includes incineration for energy capture) = 15 million tonnes per year in EU.
