Description (EN):

The project GeoPLASMA-CE addresses shallow geothermal utilization and intends to foster the market share of these techniques for heating and cooling. Shallow geothermal utilization at low temperatures and depths of up to 400 meters based on ground-source heat pumps and groundwater heat pump systems represents as a key technology for heating and cooling amongst renewables. The project tackles priority axis 2, SO 2.2 as it aims at providing a transfer of knowledge from scientific experts to public authorities and related entities in the participating countries and, in addition, intends to implement shallow geothermal use in local and regional energy planning strategies in six specific pilot areas. The project produces a transnational, web-based knowledge transfer platform, which covers decision support tools for the visualization of geothermal potentials and risks of conflicts. It furthermore implements a communication platform in order to transfer the joint knowledge to other regions of central Europe. GeoPLASMA-CE will achieve detailed energy planning strategies for the selected six pilot areas based on state of the art management concepts of shallow geothermal methods. The project will also produce harmonized transnational standards regarding the planning, assessment, management and monitoring of shallow geothermal use in central Europe. The project is structured in 4 thematic work packages (TWP), which lead to the above described outputs. The project consortiums contributes to all TWPs in order to compile the available expert- and regional expertise available at the partners. Furthermore, all TWPs consider stakeholder interaction. GeoPLASMA-CE aims to foster the use of shallow geothermal energy and achieve a change of paradigm from individual- to integrative management concepts. Thus, the project aims at transnational standards and the implementation of a web-based knowledge transfer platform, which are yet not existing in the regions addressed.

Achievements (EN):

Geothermal energy is a locally available, endogenous heat source not affected by emissions, which is a present and future key technology in order to reduce emissions hazardous to climate and air quality. GeoPLASMA-CE aimed to foster the share of shallow geothermal use in heating and cooling strategies in central Europe. The project created a web-based interface between geoscientific experts and public as well as private stakeholders to make the existing know-how about resources and risks associated to geothermal use accessible for territorial energy planning and management strategies in Central Europe. After more than 3 years of hard work, our project GEOPLASMA-CE ended in September 2019. The project team is very proud that all planned outputs for promoting an efficient and sustainable use of shallow geothermal in Central Europe could be achieved.

Expected Results (EN): R 2.2 Status of capacities of the public sector and related entities for territorially based low-carbon energy planning and policies achieved through transnational cooperation.

Expected Outputs (EN):

GeoPLASMA-CE aims at the following results: (1) One multilingual, web-portal for integrative assessment and management of shallow geothermal methods for heating and cooling: The web-portal includes 1 beta-version of a 3D-model based information tool for the dissemination of geothermal resources and risks of land-use conflicts associated to the use of geothermal methods for the public sector and entities related to the planning and installation of geothermal applications. Furthermore, the web-portal acts as an international expert platform for central Europe regions in order to disseminate levelled standards and approaches for the assessment, planning and management of shallow geothermal methods. (2) 6energy planning strategies for an integrative use of shallow geothermal methods in selected target (pilot) regions. 2 of 6 target areas are covering rural regions, 4 of 6 target areas are located in urban areas. 3 of the 6 target areas are covering trans-border regions. The web-based beta version of the information tool will be implemented for at least 2 of the 6 pilot areas. (3) At least 10 trainings (in house and webinars) for regional stakeholders (public and private entities) concerning integrative management strategies for shallow geothermal applications at the selected target regions.
