Description (EN):

While the agriculture and mining extractive industries are important sectors for the economy of Northern Periphery and Arctic (NPA) areas, their activities cause significant risk to the vulnerable environment through water and land pollution. Nutrients in agricultural runoff are one of the major contributors to eutrophication and algae blooms. The overreaching goal of WaterPro is to develop eco-efficient tools and models for SRM practices and environmental protection for the NPA sparsely populated region. This will be done through development of a Tool-Box of good management practices and communication platform for agriculture and mining extraction runoff management. Objectives The project objectives are to: Increase ecoefficient runoff management in NPA areas and preparedness to climate change, and enable faster transfer of knowledge and wider cooperation in NPA runoff management.

Expected Outputs (EN):

WaterPro's qualitative contribution to this selected Programme Result "Preparedness of responsible authorities in remote, sparsely populated areas for environmental management in relation to climate change and impacts of new investments in the exploitation of natural resources" is strongly positive. Tangible results of WaterPro in the medium term perspective will be the development and transfer a runoff management good practice Guidance and Tool-box and a cooperation model for knowledge transfer to support runoff management processes in NPA regions. In the longer term perspective WaterPro transnational cooperation will improve the level of capacity of community-based sustainable runoff management to handle changes caused by climate change and continuing use of natural resources which have the potential to impact the cultural and natural heritage throughout the whole NPA area. The defined main outputs of Waterpro (Good practice Guidance and Tool-box and knowledge transfer and cooperation model) will result in increased awareness and also behaviour change in runoff management, thus offering a concrete and very focused contribution to the Programmes' result. WaterPro tools will go beyond existing practices in NPA regions as well as ensuring a wide transfer, both inside the partnership as well as outside, to other NPA stakeholders. Demand for new runoff management tools has arisen directly from target groups identified relevant to all participating partner areas. Nowadays water management practices and procedures vary a lot in different regions and sites, eventhough the Water Framework Directive aims to make definitions and processes more equal throughout the EU area. Transnational, multilevel cooperation will help in reaching targets and WaterPro will share these aims in the sector of runoff management from agriculture and mineral extraction. During tool development, special attention and focus will be paid to eco-efficiency, for example reuse of nutrients isolated from runoffs exemplifying the economic and value-for-money aspect of these results; particularly inthe long term. Wide partner consortia as well as advisory boards in WaterPro will enhance the longevity, viability and durability of the main results after the actual implementation of the Project ends. The main deliverables and outputs will be based via open source solutions and will therefore be accessible and usable outside as well as inside the partnership. During WaterPro implementation, special attention will be focussed on distributing collected good practices to the wider audience (wp Communication). This will be done by transparent and wide dissemination via organised events, meetings and workshops, social media methods, publications and active participation and cooperation with other relevant projects, eg. regional projects "Ravinnerenki, Lantalogistiikka" and international projects like "WaterM" and possible new NPA-projects sharing some common objectives (like BioNorth).
