Description (EN):

Project FOST INNO aims to contribute to the long term growth of tourism in the Adriatic Ionian region through innovations capacity building. Common challenges of the programme area as; prolonging tourism season, improving quality in tourism and fostering better tourism employment conditions, are going to be tackled in accordance with sustainability principles to reinforce region’s competitive position. The overall objective of the project is to improve and ensure long term competitiveness of the Adriatic-Ionian area by enhancing innovation capacity in sustainable tourism. Hence, the main project intervention objective is to change current practise of insufficient incentives for innovations in sustainable tourism through main project outputs and deliverables: developed strategy for fostering innovations in sustainable tourism in Adriatic-Ionian area, established networking structure and increased knowledge transfer between business, users, academia and institutional stakeholders through Adriatic-Ionian Tourism Innovation Centre. Joint strategic framework for innovation in sustainable tourism is going to improve Adriatic-Ionian cooperation in tourism; giving common directions for policy makers’ actions and providing incentives for innovations. Networking structure embodied in future Adriatic-Ionian Tourism Innovation Centre is a multipurpose tool, foreseen as a learning and dissemination platform. Innovation incubation will be main purpose of Centre’s activities, designated to facilitate market access for innovative ideas. In order to provide valuable contribution in exchange of cooperation opportunities and best practices, networking structure has to become knowledge base and information hub for different actors such as; SMEs, universities and research centres, relevant tourism authorities, regional authorities, etc. In order to ensure sustainable competitive position of the Adriatic-Ionian area in the tourism market, transnational approach is needed for responding to challenges shared by participating countries. Given the current fragmented situation at macro-regional level, joint development of innovation system will facilitate promotion of innovative activities and transfer of project results into policies and practice. This project aims to create a long term knowledge transfer related to the innovation in sustainable tourism development in order to contribute solving tourism issues that are common for all partner countries involved.

Achievements (EN):

Created Adriatic-Ionian Tourism Innovation Centre Recommendation report: Setting up the Adriatic-Ionian Tourism Innovation Centre is a long-term action designed to provide a sustainable impetus of innovation, and allowing for maximum implementation for the common benefit of the ADRION area. Innovation Centre Recommendation report document containing recommendations for Innovation Centre future operation. The aim of the document is to suggest actions to be taken in response to the findings and provide justification for them. Adriatic-Ionian Tourism Innovation Centre (AITIC) is the main conceptual model of the FOST INNO project, established as a network of six contact points located in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Montenegro and Slovenia. The aim of the future multidisciplinary Centre is to facilitate knowledge on the role of innovations and assist in co-designing of sustainable tourism development. Sharing of knowledge and learning from the experience of others with focused, objective-seeking communication between individuals, groups, or organisations is a prerequisite for sustainable operating of the Centre. Role of the Centre is to promote close and long-term partnering. Furthermore, its role is also seen in assistance in contacting partner stakeholders and arranging an introductory meeting. Moreover, in the model of networked organisations and enterprises Centre obligation is to help with clarifying or reframing communications for better and quicker adoption. Future activities of the AITIC include: transfer and exchange of know-how on sustainable tourism development and innovations, fostering innovations in tourism, promotion of innovations as a driver of sustainable tourism development, inclusion of stakeholders in the activities of the centre, educational activities and creation of ICT solution as knowledge base in the form of web application. The ultimate purpose of the model lies in its’ contribution to the development of innovation culture that should lead to the sustainable tourism development in the Adriatic-Ionian region. In this sense, strategic goals for the AI Tourism Innovation Centre are defined and organized around six key topics: Legislation, Cooperation, Support, Transfer, Education and Research. Specific strategic goals that will serve as a base for future activities are as follows: • Development of innovation taxonomy, its popularization and advocacy; • Lobbying (nationally) for the simplification and improvement of legislative acts dealing with innovations; • Education of stakeholders about innovations, sustainable tourism and about the importance of monitoring of innovations (innovations indicators); • Lobbying nationally (promoting) for the necessity of introducing obligatory reporting on innovations; • Creating an Open Innovation Platform; • Promoting changes of HEI curricula – introducing courses dealing with innovations and innovations in tourism; • Development and support of cooperation and networking between crucial stakeholders (enabling the transfer of knowledge and innovations from other sectors into tourism, cooperation between SMEs and large enterprises (win-win), Cooperation between HEIs and enterprises); • Development of research activities related to innovations and tourism). Through development of a stronger innovation ecosystem AI partners are directly: • stimulating a more innovative, creative and risk-taking culture; • promoting a more dynamic and competitive AI region; • facilitating the entry into the AI market of new, fast-growing players; • improving the quality and scope of the advisory services in the field of the innovation in tourism; • finding the right metrics to track tourism innovations.

Expected Results (EN): Level of capacity of key innovation actors to be effectively involved in transnational actions for the development of a regional Innovation system

Expected Outputs (EN):

Project design supports enhancement of innovation capacity in sustainable tourism through developed strategic framework, established networking structure and increased knowledge transfer between business, users, academia and institutional stakeholders. Main project results would provide strong contribution to the programme result indicator defined as capacity increment of innovation actors for effective involvement in development of a regional innovation system. Strategic framework is foundation for capacity increasing through creation of shared understanding about importance of innovations in sustainable tourism; establishment of an agreed process for regional innovation development activities; facilitation of cooperation between institutional actors and other involved stakeholders, and promotion of innovations as a tool for enhancement of regional economic outcomes in sustainable manner. Established networking structure will effectively increase innovation capacity by connecting innovators with governmental bodies and higher education institution. Platform is envisioned not only as information hub but also as regional research institution for verifying the relationship between innovations and sustainable tourism development. Knowledge development approach within network would be to gradually develop the ability of recognizing applicability of the innovations by introducing them to immediately applicable contexts and consequently expanding skills needed for application. Operation also foresees network as incentive foundation for promotion of innovations. Successful application of innovations would provide positive feedback reinforcing stakeholders support and result with increasing numbers of businesses turning to innovations as the primary driver of competitiveness. Sustaining of results in described manner would in long run provide socio-economic benefits for whole programme area.
