Description (EN):

IMPRECO main objective is to enhance the safeguarding of ecosystem services and tackle their environmental vulnerability strengthening the potential of protected areas in biodiversity and ecosystems conservation through their transnational networking. The Project Partners are daily facing the challenge of Eco-system (ES) conservation and experiencing the relationship between the ES and the Socioeconomic-system (SoES) which produces flows of benefits from the ES to the SoES but also drivers of change from the SoES to the ES. Human and natural pressures are undermining the health of ES and their capacity to provide services fundamental for living conditions of people in the area. A common challenge for the pj area, is on one side, to maintain, enhance and restore ES and their functionality and, on the other, to integrate the ES in local development plans. The pj addresses such common challenges applying the so called ESS approach but in an innovative way: unleashing Protected Areas (PA) potential as laboratories to test innovative measures for ES conservation and transferring them in the surrounding territories through the application of a quadruple helix approach. Safeguarding ES requires a comprehensive approach to be effective: by converging efforts at the local level, which requires the involvement of PA managers, public bodies, civil society, academia, economic operators and by sharing efforts on transnational ground since ES are ecologically interconnected and threatened by pressures generated at such level. Therefore, the pj will establish a transnational network composed by PAs and local stakeholders and support it with a common strategy for the ES management and conservation together with a set of innovative governing tools. Thanks to such pj outputs and their active involvement in the pj implementation through a community based management system, the commitment and capacities of quadruple helix actors to tackle threats on ES and apply measures for ES management and safeguarding will be increased.

Achievements (EN):

Common Educational Programme activity in Siteia, Crete: Mitigating human disturbance in the Škocjanski zatok Nature Reserve. Within a piece of wetland on the border between the sea and the land, where the rivers Rižana and Badaševica used to flow into the sea, lies the Škocjan Inlet Nature Reserve: the Slovenian largest brackish wetland, an important area for the conservation of brackish and freshwater habitats and bird habitats. The Reserve is the spot of a pilot action aiming to decrease human disturbance affecting biodiversity. How? Through innovative and catchy didactic tools and proper public signs. Common Educational Programme activity in Siteia, Crete: The region of Crete implemented its first Common Educational Programme activity of the IMPRECO project on the protected area of the Northeastern egde of Crete. The activity organized in cooperation with the Natural History Museum of Crete, involved school children of the primary school of Siteia, who were invited to the protected area and took part in biodiversity activities. Monitoring species: the challenge is to have a common approach: The monitoring of species and habitats is essential for assessing consistency, distribution and conservation status of biodiversity. Moreover, the monitoring gives the possibility to verify the results of the management decisions that are made in the areas of investigation. To this end, IMPRECO has defined a transnational monitoring protocol based on a common methodological approach. Indeed, the project offered the possibility not only to define a Joint Monitoring Protocol but also to test it in the partner pilot protected areas in order to adopt a common tool for collecting general and specific data in a standardised way.

Expected Results (EN): Level of capacity of the involved organisations to operate transnational, providing service and management regarding environmental vulnerability, fragmentation, and the safeguarding of ecosystems’ services

Expected Outputs (EN):

• Better understanding among PPs, PAs and the stakeholders involved in the pj area for the needs of transnat. cooperation in the fields of biodiversity, ES and EES manag. The pj highlights the 1-to-1relationship between ES and socioeconomic system in the pj area, focusing on ESS benefits and drivers of change, and related needs for ESS safeguarding at transnat. level; • Enhancement of the competencies/skills of PPs, PAs and stakeholders for a more effective conservation of biodiversity, ES and EES. IMPRECO collects and shares knowledge on ESS approach and ES manag. among the PAs network, technicians, economic operators, policy decision makers, young people, students who are directly involved in the implementation of ES manag. measures; • Increased transnat. cooperation, exchange and communication among quadruple helix actors through the development and application of a PAs integrated management system. Thanks to the participative approach and pilots carried out, 105 organizations are involved by the IMPRECO ES management strategies at transnat. level; • Increased availability of data and information on biodiversity, ES and ESS quality level thanks to the development and application of a transnational monitoring system focused on target species as quality level indicators. Monitoring tools, biodiversity database and protocols are adopted by the IMPRECO transnat.l network for a systematic monitoring in the long period; • Increased number of transnat. ES manag. and planning tools through the development and adoption of a common methodology (M4ES) and strategy (S4ES) by the IMPRECO transnational network. Thanks to such pj results and their active involvement in the pj impl., the commitment and capacities of quadruple helix actors to tackle threats on ES and share/apply measures for ES management and safeguarding, supported by the IMPRECO transnational network, is increased giving a direct contribution to the programme result indicator
