The Mediterranean Sea is one of the areas most affected by Marine Litter (ML) in the world. The impacts of ML on marine biota within Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), including endangered species, remain poorly addressed, however it is clear that prevention and mitigation measures are urgently needed. The overall objective of the PlasticBusters MPAs project is to contribute to maintaining biodiversity and preserving natural ecosystems in pelagic and coastal MPAs, by defining and implementing a harmonized approach against ML. The project entails actions that address the whole management cycle of ML, from monitoring and assessment to prevention and mitigation, as well as actions to strengthen networking between and among pelagic and coastal MPAs located in Italy, France, Spain, Croatia, Albania and Greece. This is the first project at basin scale where EU and IPA countries join forces to tackle ML via a coordinated approach in order to: i) diagnose ML impacts on biodiversity in MPAs, including the identification of "ML hotspots"; ii) define and test tailor-made ML surveillance, prevention and mitigation measures in MPAs; iii) develop a common framework of ML actions for Interreg Med regions towards the conservation of biodiversity in Med MPAs. A joint governance plan will be defined through a participatory approach and the concretized commitment of Med MPAs (MoUs) to implement it will result in an increased surface area of habitats supported to attain a better conservation status.

La Méditerranée est une zone parmi les plus touchées du monde par les déchets marin. À ce jour, les impacts sur les organismes marins habitant des aires marines protégées (AMPs), notamment cétacés et tortues marines, sont mal étudiés, alors que des mesures préventives de réduction sont urgentes. L'objectif global du projet MPA-PlasticBusters est de contribuer au maintien de la biodiversité et préserver les écosystèmes naturels dans les AMPs pélagiques et côtières, par une approche harmonisée contre les déchets marins. Ce projet intégré implique des actions concernant l'ensemble du cycle des déchets en mer relatif aux pressions et leurs impacts ainsi que la mise en réseau des AMPs situées en Italie, France, Espagne, Croatie, Albanie et Grèce. Il s'agit du premier projet à l'échelle du bassin où les pays de l'UE et de l'IPA unissent leurs efforts pour lutter contre les déchets marins par une approche coordonnée, agissant pour (i) diagnostiquer les impacts des déchets marins » sur la biodiversité dans les AMP et leurs « hots spots , (ii) Définir et tester des mesures de surveillance, prévention et réduction «sur mesure», et (iii) Élaborer une stratégie territoriale commune pour les régions de la zone Interreg en vue de la conservation de la biodiversité. Le plan de gouvernance conjoint, défini par une approche participative, et l'engagement concret des AMPs pour sa mise en œuvre, permettra d'étendre les habitats protégés en vue d'un meilleur état de conservation.

Achievements (EN):

WP1: PPs completed the technical and financial reporting (D. 1. 2.1) and the 7th and 8th M&E reports (D. 1. 3.1). PPs succesfully organized the 8th SCM, held on-line on Nov. 12 (D. 1. 1.1), monthly Core Group calls, and a final partner's meeting (Athens, April 13th). PPs completed a second budget reallocation procedure in October 2021, at the end of Module 2. WP2: under PP10 coordination, PPs released the 10th (Nov. 2021) and 11th (June 2022) newsletters (D. 2. 4.2), promoted project activities via social media (D. 2. 4.3), and kept updated the web-site. National Info Days (D. 2. 5.1) were organized both in Corsica (Nov 2021, by PP2 and PP9) and Italy (April 2022 by PP5, PP1 and LP1), and several regional events (incl. those of UNEP/MAP, UfM, MSFD, and the MBPC) were attended by PPs. Almost 60 signatures of the Declaration to join the PB MPA Marine Litter Network (D. 2. 3.1) were obtained. A PB MPAs project-wide documentary, as well as educational videos by individual PPs were realized and released publicly.WP4: additional ML monitoring activities in beaches (PP3) and in endangered stranded/hospitalized species (PP4) were conducted; previously pending DEMO activities were completed in PNAT, Pelagos, and Miramare; PPs maintained communication with MPA managers to ensure the sustainibility of the pilots. PPs finalized D. 4. 2.1 and D. 4. 3.1 (LP1 lead), D. 4. 4.1 (PP7 lead), and D. 4. 6.1 and D 4. 6.2 (PP6 lead). WP5: Under PP1 and PP6 coordination, D. 5. 2.1 was finalized. The 2nd session of the Regional Training on harmonized ML monitoring was held in Dubrovnik (Oct. 2021) (D. 5. 3.1), and a mutual learning workshop on prevention and mitigation measures was held in Ebro Delta (Nov. 2021) (D. 5. 4.2). Finally, under PP6 and PP1 lead, PPs completed the project's e-learning modules (D. 5. 3.2 and D. 5. 4.1). All PPs kept contributing to activities aimed at transferring the PB MPAs approach to other Med MPAs.WP6: the First (D. 6. 4.3), Intermediate (D. 6. 4.4) and Final (D. 6. 4.5) capitalization workshops were succesfully organized during the 8th impl period (Oct. 2021, Feb and April 2022); additional national capitalization events were also organized by a few PPs. PPs efforts in capitalization activities led to the gathering of several MoUs signatures (D. 6. 3.1), and the production of a policy brief (D. 6. 4.1) and two policy recommendations reports (D. 6. 4.2). PPs collaborated in finalizing D. 6. 4.6 and D. 6. 5. 1.All deliverables produced within this period were uploaded in the project web-site.
