Description (EN):

Disasters and catastrophes pose risks not only to the conservation of the cultural heritage assets with its cultural, historic and artistic values, but also to the safety of visitors, staff and local communities. Additionally they cause undoubtedly negative consequences for the local economies due to the loss of tourism revenues, and for the livelihoods of local people who are dependent on it. ProteCHt2save outcomes will strongly contribute to improve capacities of the public and private sectors to mitigate the impacts of climate change and natural hazards on cultural heritage sites, structures and artefacts. The project focuses primarily on the development of feasible and tailored solutions for building resilience of cultural heritage to floods and events of heavy rain by applying an integrated and transnational comprehensive approach with the aim of implementing regional and local strategies on preparedness measures and evacuation plans in emergency. ProteCHt2save will deliver ICT solutions (inventory and maps) and tools (decision support tool, best practices manual, handbook on transnational rescue procedures) for risk management and protection of cultural heritage in Central Europe. Pilot actions selected on the base of risk prone areas and cultural heritage vulnerabilities will be used to implement and assess the developed ProteCHt2save strategies, and to improve the existing disaster risk management plans and policies in the CE Municipalities. Input to adaptation policies of government organisations thereby promoting improved strategies and plans for the protection of cultural heritage will be ensured as major impact. By the achievement of the planned objectives, ProteCHt2save is expected to proactively target the needs and requirements of stakeholders and policy makers responsible for disaster mitigation and safeguarding of cultural heritage assets and to foster the active involvement of citizens and local communities in the decision making process.

Additionally, they cause undoubtedly negative consequences for the local economies. Activities: The ProteCHt2save project contributed to an improvement of capacities of the public and private sectors to mitigate the impacts of climate change and natural hazards on cultural heritage sites, structures and artefacts. The project focused primarily on the development of feasible and tailored solutions for building resilience of cultural heritage to floods and events of heavy rain. It helped regional and local authorities to prepare measures and evacuation plans in case of emergencies. Summary of project achievements: ProteCHt2save outputs and results aimed at improving protection, management and sustainable use of the cultural heritage, as well as its valorization in a changing environment. A Web GIS tool for risk mapping has been first of all developed in support of policy and decision makers for the development of measures and strategies of preparedness with short and long term perspective aiming at the protection of Cultural Heritage in Central Europe exposed to extreme events linked to climate change (particularly heavy rains, flood and fire due to drought periods). A rate of vulnerability has been determined for each of the pilot site in the target regions and integrated in the Web GIS tool for the risk assessment. A decision support tool for the analysis of the criticalities determining the vulnerability of cultural heritage has been produced. Expected Results (EN): R 3.2 Status of capacities of the public and private sector for the sustainable use of cultural heritage and resources achieved through transnational cooperation.

Expected Outputs (EN):

Through transnational cooperation, ProteCHt2save will mainly result in an improvement of the capacities of Central European Municipalities in strengthening the resilience of CH to flood, heavy rain, droughts impact linked to climate change. A more sustainable and effective safeguarding and management of Central European CH is expected, through an improved risk management and better understanding of the local contexts of heritage sites. In order to achieve the projects results, partners coming from 7 countries (IT, SL, AT, CZ, PL, HU, HR) will share their experience on CH protection and safeguard in order to implement innovative management models. Reduced fragmentation in this sector through increased collaboration and cooperation among actors from the public and private sectors and a fostering of an interdisciplinary approach is consequently foreseen as a major impact. Input to adaptation policies of government organisations thereby promoting improved strategies and plans for the protection of CH will be ensured. By the achievement of the planned objectives ProteCHt2save is expected to proactively target the needs and requirements of diverse target groups: - policy makers responsible for disaster mitigation and safeguarding of CH assets. - stakeholders for CH protection. - citizens and local communities for risk control policies. Finally, the communication activities will foster the transferability of project outcomes to territories facing similar issues and challenges.
