Description (EN):

Museums are perceived as centralised institutions based on specific collections within specific buildings. Connected Culture and Natural Heritage in the Northern Environment (CINE) embraces the concept of Museum Without Walls - an outward facing museum that takes an active role in challenging perceptions, in fostering social change and in providing access and information to diverse audiences, using new technologies to step beyond the traditional museum context. The main project output is the development of a multi-functional, digital interpretation and data-management toolkit to create new, unique on-site and off-site customer experiences in specific locations in the northern environment. Innovation will be used to enhance capacities and preparedness of local and regional communities, by raising awareness of natural and cultural heritage sites. The aim is to protect, promote and develop sites that are at risk due to a changing climate, or those we consider of particular significance for future generations. CINE contributes to sustainable management of natural and cultural heritage in remote areas by collecting, sharing and creating knowledge that can be transferred to diverse audiences with a view to empowering the public, to strengthen communities and to influence regional planning and policy. The toolkit will create public interfaces such as interpretation apps, on-site virtual time travel, and virtual remote tours to inaccessible sites. These methods will transform the cultural and natural heritage experience, enable sustainable environmental management, whilst increasing accessibility for older people, for people without the means to travel, and people with disabilities.

Expected Results (EN): Preparedness of responsible authorities in remote, sparsely populated areas for environmental management in relation to climate change and impacts of new investments in exploitation of natural resources

Expected Outputs (EN):

The project main results are: 1. CINE will explore the social, economic and political role of heritage within remote and sparsely populated areas. Participating museums will embrace their responsibility to raise awareness for the local landscape and its natural and cultural heritage, in order to protect and enable sustainable environmental management. Museums will play a stronger part in offering on-site specific heritage data to communities, authorities and visitors. 2. CINE will develop best practice for the sector to shape environmental policies and to expand the capacity for regional entrepreneurship. We will build partnerships with local, regional and national authorities and policy makers, to steer the protection of natural and cultural heritage. 3. CINE will use and develop existing and new technologies to gather and disseminate information accessible to a wider public and share their knowledge with other SMEs within the creative and tourism industries. We recognise the importance of building ICT competences in the institutions to facilitate the collection, dissemination of heritage environmental information from and to communities, authorities and end users/visitors. These results make a positive contribution to the programme result: CINE will ensure museums take responsibility for environmental management, and in doing so, will encourage other authorities to do the same. We want to re-invent the local museum as a catalyst for change. The museum will function as a central resource for information that is useful to the local community and SMEs, national and international visitors, and local authorities. Local communities and SMEs use the museum as a deposit and source of information. The community adds valuable data and knowledge as well as a vital service to visitors: hospitality. This collaborative model functions as an informal interface between visitors to the region and locals . Both aspects result in the creation of pride of place and a shared identity through collective memory. National and international visitors visit the museum for the experience and a local story. They learn by drawing comparisons to their own cultures and backgrounds. They want to be inspired and informed. In return they boost our economy. The project's main output is a digital toolkit that can be used to improve access to information that has been collected e.g. through excavations and research. It contributes to sustainable management of natural and cultural heritage in remote areas by making new ways of discovery and raising awareness for important places. Our remit extends beyond the walls of our museums into the landscape and into the public realm (Museum Without Walls). This project creates digital data in specific geographical contexts, and makes it widely available. The data and knowledge that museums store will be better used by authorities who make decisions on planning and regulations for sustainable environmental management.
